University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) was founded in 1952 following the amalgamation of the best departments in related fields of five eminent universities as a result of a nationwide reorganization of the higher education system. Over half a century of remarkable growth, it has developed into one of the most influential key national universities sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education. While retaining its current leading position in metallurgy and materials sciences, it is making great efforts to develop other areas and to achieve a balanced disciplinary structure in engineering and technology, science, management, economics, social sciences, humanities and law in the near future. Currently, University of Science and Technology Beijing enrolled 27,371 full-time students includes 13,393 undergraduates, 9,344 master candidates, 2,912 doctoral candidates, 243 junior college students and 829 international students.
 
(1). History 
 
The combination of various departments in the field of metallurgy, mining, material sciences from Technological Institute of North China University, Tangshan Jiaotong University, Beiyang University, Northwest Institute of Technology and Shanxi University together form Beijing Industrial Institute of Steel and Iron in 1952.  It was renamed as Beijing Steel and Iron Institute in 1960. The name University of Science and Technology Beijing was approved in 1988. From that period the University was placed under direct supervision of the Ministry of Education.  In 1997, University of Science and Technology Beijing was selected into the first tier of universities for China's 211 Project. 
 
(2). Discipline and programs
 
University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) offers 44 undergraduate programs, 109 Master’s programs and 48 doctoral programs. There are 12 national key disciplines in the fields of metallurgy, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering and mining. The university also has 13 key disciplines of Beijing Municipality in the field of Nano-Materials and Physics of Devices, Mechanical Engineering, Computer systems organization, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Thermo-physics, Mechanical Manufacture and Automation, Vehicle Engineering, Control Theory and Control engineering, Management Science and Engineering, and Ideological Education. From 2006 to 2009, the disciplines of metallurgy engineering and the history of science and technology were ranked first among Chinese universities, and the disciplines of materials science and engineering and mining engineering were ranked second and third respectively.
 
(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research 
 
In scientific research, University of Science and Technology Beijing hosts two national key laboratories, two national engineering research centers, two national sciences and technology platform and 20 ministerial open laboratories and research centers. University of Science and Technology Beijing is particularly strong at solving technological problems in the modernization of metallurgy and materials production, as well as at developing new technologies in these and other industries. In the two phases of the "211 Project" already completed, University of Science and Technology Beijing has won four First Prize awards in the National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology, which ranks as a national record. Since 2004 USTB's research fund has been expanding at the pace of nearly 100 million CNY a year. In 2007, University of Science and Technology Beijing became the first and only university sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education to be responsible for the "National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Project". Among its 3,385 faculty are 452 professors, 745 associate professors, including 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
 
(4). University of Science and Technology Beijing Achievement
 
University of Science and Technology Beijing was one of the first universities to be entitled to establish state-approved graduate schools and was chosen to be part of China's "211 Project", which is designed to develop a hundred first rate universities in the 21st century. Since 2004, University of Science and Technology Beijing has received more than 50 Teaching Achievement awards from the Ministry of Education or other Educational Institutes. Twenty-eight of its courses have been listed among National or Ministerial Excellent Courses. Four doctoral dissertations have been recognized as among the  “National Top 100 Doctoral dissertations”. 
 
The science team of University of Science and Technology Beijing won the second and fourth CCTV National Student Robot Design Competitions, and two student teams won First Prize in the final of the second National College Students Vehicle Competition. In 2006 it was also selected as one of a select group of pilot universities for the "Platform for National Advanced Disciplines Innovation" program. A total of 17 science projects of University of Science and Technology Beijing academicians have won national prizes, which is also a national record. In 2007, University of Science and Technology Beijing became the first and only university sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education to be responsible for the "National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Project".
 
(5). Communication and international cooperation
 
University of Science and Technology Beijing has maintained close collaboration with local communities, extending the university’s social responsibility and developing further opportunities for excellence. Moreover, the university has strengthened its co-operation with worldwide enterprises in research, academic and educational fields. Accordingly, it is consistently approaching its strategic target of contributing more to society and establishing a worldwide reputation”. University of Science and Technology Beijing has so far entered into partnership with nearly 70 foreign universities and institutes from different countries and districts, and invited more than 500 world-renowned academics such as Professor Akihisa INOUE, President of Tohoku University, as its honorary professors.
