Why Study at Beihang University, China

Beihang University, previously known as Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA) is a major public research university located in HaiDian District in Beijing capital city of China.  BUAA is a member of China's Project 211 and Project 985 group of key state universities, with a heavy focus on high level technological and scientific research. BUAA was founded on October 25, 1952; BUAA is one of China's leading universities on research and education. It is regarded as one of the best engineering universities in China and has a great influence on China's aeronautical and astronautical industry. There are currently 24,000 students enrolled in BUAA, including over 10,000 postgraduate students. Doctoral program are available in 49 fields, master program, in 144 fields and bachelor programs in 48 subjects.

(1) History

Beihang University formerly known as Beijing Institute of Aeronautics or BUAA was formed in 1952 from a merger of the aeronautical departments of Tsinghua University, Peiyang University, Xiamen University, Sichuan University, Yunnan University, Northwestern Engineering College, North China University, and Southwest Aeronautical Institute.

The meeting announcing the founding of the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics (BIA) was held in the auditorium of Beijing Institute of Technology on October 25, 1952. In the early days of the university, most of the faculty and students lived on campuses of Tsinghua University and Beijing Institute of Technology before they moved on to their own new campus, which was chosen in May, 1953 and located at the BaiYanZhuang Village, Haidian District, in the western suburb of Beijing. BUAA was among China's first 16 key universities back in the 1950s, and among the top 15 for priority development during China's 7th Five-Year Plan period (1986–1990). BUAA was among the first batch of 15 universities in “project 211 for Higher Education.”

Since 1952, this university was named the "Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics". Since May 1988, it has been known as the "Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics". In 2002, the university board decided to change the English name of the university to Beihang University, yet the abbreviation BUAA was retained.

(2) Discipline and programs

In the 1950s, BUAA had only two departments with 4 majors: Aeroplane Design and Aeroplane Technology in the Department of Aeroplane Engineering, and Engine Design, Engine Technology in the Department of Aeroplane Engine Engineering. Today, Beihang University has developed into an open, comprehensive and research-oriented university with focuses on aeronautics, astronautics and informatics.

Through more than 50 years of development, BUAA has grown into science and Technology University with aerospace features, combining disciplines in science, engineering, liberal arts, law, economics, management and education. There are currently 24,000 students enrolled in BUAA, including over 10,000 postgraduate students. Doctoral program are available in 49 fields, 17 postdoctorate stations, master program in 144 fields and bachelor programs in 48 subjects. BUAA is Beihang (BUAA) equipped with advanced laboratories and teaching apparatus. There are 27,811 full-time students including 14,428 undergraduate students, 8,700 postgraduate students, 4,015 doctoral candidates, 668 international students. BUAA was approved as the first batch of pilot unit for national professional engineering doctoral degree education in 2011.

Beihang University currently employs over 3000 faculty members, including more than 460 professors and 1000 associate professors. Over 130 professional laboratories of which 35 are listed as state or ministry key laboratories serve students and staff. Beihang University has a largest library at the area of over 24,000 m2, has a collection of over 1.2 million and more than 4,000 sets.  BUAA has 7 national level key laboratories, 3 national level engineering research centers, 42 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories. Also has 4 Innovative Research Groups of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 11 Innovation Teams of Ministry of Education, 6 Defense-Related Science and Technology Innovation Teams.

(4) Great achievements

Beihang University cultivates talents and focuses on moral quality cultivation among their students. In 2011 BUAA was approved as the first batch of pilot unit for national professional engineering doctoral degree education. There emerged a large batch of science and technology in the number of signed students who won national award of science and technology achievement is up to 51. Beihang University is always in the leading domestic universities in the field of cutting-edge technology research, a variety of types of aircraft researched and successfully launched (test flight) fill several domestic blanks, such as China’s first light passenger aircraft “Beijing No.1”, Asian first sounding rocket “Beijing No.2”, China’s first pilotless aircraft “Beijing No.5”, “Bees” series of aircrafts and coaxial double rotor pilotless helicopter. Since “Tenth Five-year Plan”, BUAA has obtained 55 items of national three major science and technology awards, especially in recent years, has won eight awards of first prize of nation level science and technology within nine years.
