Why Study at Beijing Forestry University, China

Beijing Forestry University (BFU) is one of the key national universities directly under the Ministry of Education in China. Beijing Forestry University (BFU) provides the advanced education in the studies of forestry and ecological environment. It was one of the first universities to be admitted into the "211 Project" and the 21st-century Educational Vitalization Action Program. Since its establishment 50 years ago, more than 30,000 students and a number of foreign students have graduated from the university, and among them 11 have attained to the positions of academicians. The university possesses a well trained faculty members composed of 956 full-time teachers, including 5 academicians, 763 full and associate professors. The university not only possesses the traditional disciplines which are recognized for their high quality both at home and abroad, but also has established a large number of new disciplines to meet the development of the society. 

(1) History 
 
Beijing Forestry University (BFU) was formed in 1952; the university was originally the forestry department of the Royal University which was the predecessor of Beijing University of the Qing Dynasty during 1644-1911. BFU is located in the internationally well-known Zhong Guan Cun Hi-Tech Zone. After its foundation a number of distinguished experts and professors from Peking University, Tsinghua University and Beijing Agriculture University were transferred to the university, which has inherited their rigorous style and discipline in academic pursuits. Since its foundation BFU has transformed into a comprehensive university, as one of the key institutions of higher education in China, is the cradle of professionals specialized in advanced technology of multi-disciplines. In 2000, BFU established the Graduate School, the only one among the forestry universities and colleges nationwide, and a stock company of science and technology. 
 
(2) Discipline and programs 
 
Started as a specialized college with only 1 undergraduate program and 2 non-degree programs,  Beijing Forestry University has developed itself into a multi-disciplinary comprehensive university that consists of 16 schools/department and Colleges. The schools, colleges and departments are: Academy of Forestry, School of Soil and Water Conservation, College of Biological Sciences and Technology, College of Landscape Architecture, Colleges of Economics and Management, School of Technology, College of Materials Science and Technology, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, School of Foreign Languages, School of Information Science and Technology; Faculty of Science, College of Nature Conservation; College of Environmental Science and Engineering; and the Department of Physical Education. BFU offers 57 undergraduate programs, 125 master’s programs, 47 PhD schemes and 7 post-doctoral research stations. With distinguished academicians in the leading, a highly competent teaching force provides high-quality education to 32,000 students, which breaks down to 13,000 undergraduates, 4,100 graduates, 13,000 continuing education students and 1,700 part-time graduate students. Currently, BFU count more than 95 international students in undergraduate, masters and PhD programs. 
 
(3) Academic facilities and Scientific research 
 
Beijing Forestry University is a well equipped modern university featured by the magnificent Central Building of Teaching, the first-rate gymnasium, advanced laboratories and practice bases, and high-speed campus network. Beijing Forestry University boasts advanced Computer Center, Audio-Visual Teaching Center, Biological Center, Micro-Technology Center, Forest Organism Center, and a forest farm for teaching and research (Jiu Feng National Forest Park). Research Center of Soil Control Technology of Loess Plateau in China, and the Training Center of Desertification Control of ChinaQuiet are attached to the BFU. The computerized checking system has been set up for all the books in the library, and located in the library building is the Imported Teaching Materials Center for the forestry universities and colleges nationwide. The construction of the modern high-rise student apartment building and the new classroom building was completed in 2001. All those facilities make BFU to have a favorable atmosphere for teaching and learning. 
 
(4) Beijing Forestry University Achievement 
 
In recent years, nearly 200 achievements of scientific research received rewards from the national, provincial and ministerial authorities, and more than 20 achievements of teaching were rewarded by the national and municipal governments.
Some of extracurricular activities at BFU have become quite influential in the society, such as the Society of Scientific Exploration and Wilderness Survival and the Association of Beijing College Volunteers for Environmental Protection, and the former received the "Prize of the Earth", the highest prize from the National Bureau of Environmental Protection. In recent years, the students of BFU won 4 prizes consecutively at the College Students' Landscape Gardening Architecture Design Competitions and the International Association of Landscape Gardening Architects, as well as the Golden Prize of International College Students' Architecture Design and the prizes for Gardening Design Competitions. Excellent achievements were also made in the competitions of scientific inventions, mathematics, and art organized domestically.
 
(5) Communication and international cooperation
 
Beijing Forestry University has adopted a full range of measures to promote international cooperation and has been listed among the signature universities entitled to government grants for its graduate students to attend overseas education programs. Cooperative relationships have been entered between BFU and over 170 universities, research institutes and NGOs from about 30 countries/regions. In addition to the cooperative undergraduate program (in turf-grass science) jointly offered with the MSU in the US, BFU also offers a series of short- or long-term student exchange programs with other universities in Canada, the US, Finland and others. In 2007, BFU became a university entitled to China’s Government Grants for Overseas Students, which was followed by the launch of another graduate program that provides scholarship to overseas students under the framework of the Asia-Pacific Sustainable Forest Management Network and offers full range of courses delivered in English. The overseas student education programs now available in BFU covers that for bachelor, master as well as doctorate degrees. Several high-level conferences and workshops have been sponsored/ organized by BFU. Since 2011 the Secretariat for the Coordinating Mechanism for the Forestry Universities in Asia-Pacific Region is situated in BFU.
