Beijing International Studies University (BISU) was founded in 1964; is a nationwide renowned key comprehensive university of higher education and has developed into a multi-disciplinary university incorporating liberal arts, management, economics and law, with the specialties of foreign languages and tourism as its most distinguishing feature. In recent years BISU takes great efforts to develop international student’s education. Currently, BISU has 8,000 long-term and 2,000 short-term international students from more than 70 countries studying in BISU.
(1) History
Beijing Second Foreign Language Institute currently known as Beijing International Studies University was founded in 1964. This new foreign language institution of higher learning was under the leadership of China International Cultural Liaison Commission. On October 24, 1964, a grand ceremony to mark the founding and commencement of the school was held. Mr. Guo Moruo inscribed the name for the school; Mr. Li Chang, commissar and vice director of China International Cultural Liaison Commission, was appointed president of the school. Later in June 1970, the China International Cultural Liaison Commission was disbanded, and the school came under the leadership of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and China National Tourism Administration successively. In 2000, BISU was transferred to the jurisdiction of Beijing Municipality. Led by disciplinary development, BISU aims to cultivate talents and carry out research for international cultural exchanges. In the year of 2002 and 2004, BISU was honored as Advanced Unit of International Students Education by Beijing Municipal Educational Commission.
(2) Discipline and programs
Beijing International Studies University focus on foreign language studies as its main discipline and tourism management as its characteristic discipline, BISU has developed a diverse mix of disciplines such as language and literature, management, economics and law. Among these, foreign language studies, tourism management, business management and international trade are four Beijing municipal key disciplines under construction. BISU offers Master’s Degree programs in 4 First-tier Disciplines , i.e. Foreign Languages and Literature, Business Administration, Chinese Language and Literature and Applied Economics, and in 22 second-level discipline. BISU is also eligible in offering Master’s degree for 5 professional programs, i.e., Master in Translation and Interpretation, Master in Business Administration, Master in Tourism Management, Master in International Business and Master in Chinese International Education.
(3) Academic facilities and Scientific research
In recent years, the university has increased its various investments tremendously. The total construction area on the school premises has exceeded 284,000 square meters with adequate facilities for teaching, research, and sports, thereby ensuring good conditions for school operation and up-grading the quality of support services for teaching and coaching. The university possesses a variety of teaching-centered establishments with advanced educational facilities and equipment. There are 132 multi-media classrooms, 33 language labs, 5 simultaneous interpretation practice labs, 6 Teaching and Practice labs, 7 computer networking labs, 3 recording-and-playing classrooms, a lab for simulated trading and transactions, a tourism oriented information lab, a moot court, a journalism oriented practice lab, and so on.
(4) Beijing International Studies University Achievement
By adhering to the concept of people-orientedness, and promoting strategies for “good talents, strong school”, BISU has cultivated and gathered in the school an impressive number of high-level scholars and teachers. The University now has over 500 professional teachers on the faculty, most of who have obtained academic degrees or otherwise studied abroad. Of these teachers nearly 50% are professors or associate professors. There are more than 60 foreign experts on the school faculty as well. BISU is proud of having 7 “Model Teachers of Beijing”, 1 “National Outstanding Teaching Team”, 3 “Excellent Teaching Teams of Beijing”, 8 “Innovative Academic Teams of Beijing”, and 9 “Top Pioneering Talented Teachers” and “Pioneering Academic Talents” awarded by Beijing Municipality.
(5) Communication and international cooperation
Beijing International Studies University attaches importance to international cooperation and collaboration and by now has established substantial cooperative relations with more than 140 universities or educational institutions in 35 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, France, Australia, Russia, South Korea, Egypt, etc. Each year a considerable number of teachers are sent abroad either to further study, as visiting scholars, to do joint research work, or to teach Mandarin. Meanwhile, teachers and scholars from all over the world come to BISU to teach. Every year an average of over 300 students go abroad to further their study, while more than 1000 foreign students come to BISU. Four Confucius Institutes have been established in Mexico, Morocco, Britain, and France respectively-an active stance of BISU's participation in China’s international dissemination of standard Chinese language.
