Why Study Medicine at China Medical University

Brief Introduction

China Medical University (CMU) is among the first batch of Chinese medical schools authorized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to recruit international students. It is also one of the universities authorized by MOE to teach medicine in English for international students. China Medical University begun to recruit international students with Chinese government scholarship in 1976 and began to recruit international students for MBBS program in English medium in 2005. The MBBS program for America Class started in 2010, recruiting students with American Bachelor Degree. Currently, there are more than 700 international students from the United States of America, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe. They are studying in the different levels, including doctoral students (in Chinese medium), post graduates (in Chinese medium), undergraduates (in English medium, Chinese medium, Japanese & Chinese medium) and visiting students (in Chinese medium).

The international medical education of China Medical University had been in the charge of International Exchange Center since the very beginning. In the year 2010, the International Education School was established. It is a department responsible for international student admission, teaching as well as student administration and service. In the recent years, the international medical education of China Medical University has achieved great progress. A perfect teaching and management system has been formed. Students’ quality has been greatly improved. Its MBBS program in English medium has reached a leading level in China and won high international reputations.

With the construction of the new campus, the improvement of students’ teaching and living conditions and the perfection of teaching and administration, China Medical University will gradually increase the number of international students so as to make contributions to the development of international medical education, cultivation of high-quality international medical staff and increasing the international reputation of China Medical University.

(1). History

China Medical University (CMU) was the first medical school established by the Chinese Communist Party. Its precursor was the Chinese Workers’-Peasants’ Red Army Military Medical School and Chinese Workers’-Peasants’ Red Army Health School which had been founded in Ruijin city, Jiangxi province, in 1931. After the Long March with the Red Army, it was relocated to Shanbei.

In 1940 comrade Mao Zedong proposed, and the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party approved, the name of the school being changed to China Medical University. In July 1946 the university was ordered to enter northeast China with the army and reached Xinshan city (now Hegang city), Heilongjiang province. In November 1948 the whole northeast of China was liberated and the university was ordered to move to Shenyang. In 1948 and 1949 it absorbed the medical school formerly operated by the (Japanese) South Manchuria Railway (the South Manchuria Medical College, later called the Shenyang Medical College which had opened in 1911) and the Mukden Medical College (sometimes spelled Moukden Medical College) whose origins go back to 1892 when Dr Dugald Christie founded the Shenjing Medical School. In 1911/1912 this became a formal medical college, the Mukden Medical College.

(2). Discipline Construction

As of January 2015, the school has 6 first class disciplines with a master degree authorization, 63 discipline (Professional) with doctoral degree authorization, 80 discipline (Professional) with master degree authorization,  5 national key disciplines, 1 national key (Foster) discipline,  40 National Health Planning Commission National Clinical Key specialist construction projects, 6 first class characteristic discipline in Liaoning Province, 7 post doctoral mobile station, 19 bachelor degree.

(3). Campus Overview

China Medical University consists of 33 Schools and Departments, As of January 2015, there are 2 national research base, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 national key laboratory training base built by the Ministry of Education and Liaoning Province, 4 key laboratory of the national health and Family Planning Commission, 3 Chinese Medicine Research Laboratory (grade three) of the State Administration of traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 Major scientific and technological platform of Liaoning Province, 16 key laboratory of Liaoning Province, 15 University Key Laboratory of Liaoning Province, 1 Engineering Technology Research Center of Liaoning Province, 6 research center of Liaoning Province, 13 Translational medicine research center of Liaoning Province, 32 medical center of Liaoning Province.

Totally, more than 14,000 enrolled students, among whom international students reaches 730 among the medical students. The university consists of two parts---the main campus and the Shenbei campus covering entirely an area of 1,372,000 square meters, construction area of 702800 square meters. Its library has a collection of 1,195,600 volumes, electronic resource meter 21TB; order of 35 kinds of foreign language text books database, Japanese medical literature collection is particularly rich, the library is the National Center for Japanese medical literature. The experimental animal is the center of quality testing in Liaoning province and the Research Key Laboratory of genetically modified animals in Liaoning province.

(4). Affiliated Hospitals

China Medical University has 3 affiliated Comprehensive hospitals and 1 Special hospital, including the First Hospital of China Medical University, Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University and the Hospital of Stomatology. These affiliated hospitals enjoy high reputation in the northeast of China and provide a total number of more 9748 sickbeds for students to practice or rotation. Students can have good practice and internships here and receive enough exercises to be qualified as a doctor in the future.

(5). Significant Achievements

China Medical University has trained a total of more than 8 million senior medical professionals, graduates from all over many countries and regions all over the country and the world, cultivate and bring up a large number of national health management of famous leading cadres and the medical profession of famous experts and scholars. According to incomplete statistics, among those students graduated from China Medical University over a hundred people serve as deputy ministerial level or above, 9 people serve as minister, vice minister of Ministry of Health, more than 40 are generals, 14  are academician  of  Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

(6). Communication and Cooperation

China Medical University cooperated with the Queen's University of Belfast and established an union college. At the same time, China Medical University establish a good communication relationship with the United States, Britain, France, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Canada, Australia, Italy, Denmark, Spain, North Korea, Finland and Macao and other countries, 87 universities and scientific research institutions, carried out fruitful cooperation with the World Bank (WBG), the China Medical Foundation (CMB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and other institutions. 315 international renowned experts and scholars have been employed as the honorary title of the school, in recent years China Medical University carried out 61 major international cooperation projects, 35 CMB projects.
