Brief introduction

China University of Petroleum - Beijing (CUPB) is a national key university in China, located in the world famous scenic Changping District, the area close to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs. It is one of the 100 institutions implementing the national "211 Project". Since its foundation in 1953, the university has been working hard to improve its program quality and broaden its disciplines and research areas.

1. History 

China University of Petroleum - Beijing, founded in 1953, was known as Beijing Petroleum Institute. It was founded from the combination of the best petroleum associated departments in the country: Petroleum research groups in Department of Geology, Department of Mining and Department of Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University, Petroleum research groups in four departments of Peiyang University (now Tianjin University), Part of Department of Chemical Engineering from Peking University, Part of Department of Mathematics from Yanching University (now merged into Peking University), Some students and faculty from fluid fuel research group in Department of Chemical Engineering from Dalian Institute of Technology (now Dalian University of Technology), and Some students and faculty in Department of Mining and Department of Chemical Engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical Institute (now Northwest Polytechnical University). It moved to Dongying, Shandong Province in 1969, with name changed to Huadong Petroleum Institute. In 1988, it was renamed The University of Petroleum consisting of one part in Dongying as the college and one in Beijing as the graduate school. Each gradually developed into universities with both undergraduate and graduate students. In January 2005, its name changed to China University of Petroleum. In 2004, China University of Petroleum (East China) began to move to Qingdao, and completed the relocation in 2012. Dongying campus currently serves as the base for continuing education, remote education, research laboratories, and industry collaboration.

2. Discipline and programs

China University of Petroleum - Beijing has several programs and disciplines arranged in different schools: College of Geosciences, College of Petroleum Engineering, College of Chemical Engineering, College of Mechanical and Transportation Engineering, College of Geophysics and Information Engineering, College of Science, School of Business, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Science, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Physical Education, School of Continuing Education, Chinese Language Center, Enhanced Oil Recovery Center. It offers 25 Bachelor’s, 148 Master’s, 45 PhD programs and one diploma program in Chinese Language Study. Among a staff body of 1234, 549 are professors. The number of the registered degree students comes up to 12794, including 744 PhD students, 4633 postgraduate students, 6894 undergraduate students and 821 international students. 

3. Academic facilities and scientific research 

China University of Petroleum - Beijing is located in Beijing, the capital city of China. It also has a campus in Qingdao, which is named as China University of Petroleum- East China. The university is equipped with the first-class facilities, including a library, modernized classrooms, new computer facilities and a comprehensive sports center. The university library has a collection of over 1,176,000 volumes covering the whole range of the subjects studied at the university. It provides excellent services, including on-line service for literature search, to every reader. The university library has adequate computer facilities and all computer rooms on the campus with internet access open to all registered students. One of the principles of the university has been to work closely with industry and international community. About 80% of the research projects of the university are sponsored by oil companies of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC). The university has set up cooperative relations with 89 overseas universities, research institutions and oil companies, and most of the relations are very active and productive.

4. Great  Achievement

China University of petroleum - Beijing has made great achievements in education and research, the university, as a national key university, has successfully passed the prejudication conducted by all the authorized organizations of different levels for a government-launched "211 Project" and has been selected as one of the first institutions implementing the project by China State Educational Ministry. China University of petroleum has made a great achievement in research field one of the key research laboratory is the State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resources and Prospecting (SKLPRP) which was approved in July 2007 as a state key laboratory in earth sciences field by the China Ministry of Science and Technology (CMST). It passed the construction and operation assessment conducted by CMST in April and December 2010 respectively. During its 3 years’ construction, SKLPRP has successfully initiated its research and made great achievements in science and technology in the areas of upstream and midstream of petroleum industry. It has become a critical research institution for fundamental research of petroleum resources and prospecting in China.

5. Communication and international cooperation

China University of petroleum - Beijing has institutional linkages with 87 universities and companies in U.S.A., Canada, U.K., Australia, Japan, France, Norway, Russia, Romania, Thailand, Brazil, etc. Internationalization is one of the university development strategies in the future. The University is ready to pursue any new relations of mutual benefit with international organizations.
