Brief Introduction

Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications (CQUPT), founded in 1950, is one of the few universities that has been blue-printed and given priority to develop by the State. It has also grown into a prominent university and is acknowledged by its excellence in the field of information industry both within and outside China.

The university surrounded by mountains, is located in Nanshan Scenic of Chongqing Municipality, and now covers an area of 730 acres with a building area of 700,000 square meters. There are over 24,000 students, including more than 3,000 postgraduates. It has a faculty of more than 1,600, and has about 100 well-known experts as well as more than 20 fellows who are visiting or part-time professors from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as from countries like the UK, Canada, USA, Poland, and India.  Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications has cultivated over 90,000 specialists in a variety of fields for more than 60 years, who are now known as the "cradle of specialists in the information industry".

(1). History 

Along with the birth of People’s Republic of China and the liberation of Chongqing, the university was established in 1950. It was named Chongqing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications by the State Council in 1959 and after that it began undergraduate education. In 1965 it became one of the 10 colleges and universities that were entitled to have postgraduate programs in Sichuan Province (Chongqing separated itself from Sichuan as a Municipality in 1997).

It was transferred from the Ministry of Information Industry to Chongqing Municipality in 2000 under the policy of university system reform, thus financed by the central government and the local government together, mainly by the Chongqing Municipal People.

(2). Discipline and programs 

As of September 2011, 11 first level disciplines and 11 second level disciplines of Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications were selected as the provincial and ministerial level key disciplines. Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications has 12 first-disciplines and 38 secondary-discipline master's degree authorization; it recruits and cultivates masters of engineering in eight areas. Besides, the university has the qualification to recommended undergraduate students to pursue postgraduate study without examination and it has built engineering master of international project management professional certification and Training Center.

State-level characteristic disciplines: Communication Engineering, computer science and technology, automation, microelectronics, software engineering

Provincial and ministerial level characteristic disciplines: software engineering, electronic information engineering, computer science and technology, automation, measurement and control technology and instrument, microelectronics, information management and information system, information and computing science, radio and TV director, software engineering.

(3). Academic facilities and scientific research 

Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications has been equipped with local campus network connected over 10,00 computers. Also it provides modern teaching and scientific researching facilities to form an supportive system which is all-direction, open, multi-level, efficient and service-centered.

Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications Library has a possession of more than 1,100,000 items as well as more than 900,000 electronic books. The building covers 20,800 square meters and provides about 1,200 seats for students. It has a comprehensive operating system with a variety of electronic resources. Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications commits itself to innovations and explorations, and is known as the birthplace of digital communication in China. It holds leading positions in the R&D of wireless network engineering and testing, the next generation wideband wireless communication, computer networking and information security, intelligent information processing, industrial EPA and sensor networking, advance manufacturing, micro-electronics and specialized chip design. The university has assumed over 800 scientific projects at either state or provincial/ministry level. 

(4). Great achievements 

Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications has established the EPA international standard, developed key equipment of information isolation and exchange in the field of security in China, and developed the first core chip of Internet of Things in the world. The university was granted the National Technology Invention Award, and the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and is ranked among the top 100 of China in terms of science and technology, further being acknowledged as the national model for IT innovation and Hi-tech industrialization.

(5). Communication and international cooperation 

Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications has built many well-established relationships with over 70 universities from other counties such as USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Russia and Korea etc. With these universities Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications participates in student exchange, scholar visits and joint research. Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications has also built partnerships with some world IT employers such as HP, Cisco, Microsoft, and Oracle, which has set up the CQUPT-HP Joint School of Software and the International Institute of Semiconductors (Chongqing). The university has promoted Sino-us Dual-degree Program with Northern Arizona University which focus on student joint training. Chongqing University of Post and Telecommunications has also successfully hosted many international academic conferences and attracts overseas statesmen, business elites, eminent scholars and experts to lecture or visit.
