Brief Introduction
East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) is located in Shanghai, a cosmopolitan metropolis where distinguished people, diverse society and exquisite attractions can be found. 1. History
East China university of Science and Technology was officially founded in 1952 after the mergence of chemical or chemistry departments from Jiaotong University, Université d’Aurora, Utopia University, Soochow University and Jiangnan University, and became the first chemical industry oriented university in China named as East China Institute of Chemical Technology. The institute was first located on 195 Zhengfa Rd, Jiangwan District in Shanghai, the campus of the former School of Science of Tongji University. In 1985 the university establishes the first batch of research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships: Chemical Engineering Postdoc Station and Industrial Chemistry Postdoc Station. In early 1993, the National Ministry of Education approved the renaming of the university as the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) and was selected as one of the national 211 project universities.
2. Discipline and programs
Today, a wide range of programs is offered to cater to the demands of the society and to prepare the students for an ever-changing global context. The university has 15 academic schools, academic fields of East China University of Science and Technology cover eleven branches and thirty-four subjects. The university now has 67 specialties for undergraduate studies, and it is entitled to confer master’s degrees in 147 programs, doctoral degrees in 81 programs, Engineering Master Degrees in 20 programs as well as the MBA program, MPA program, Normal Degree program for College Teachers and 12 post-doctoral centers. There are 7 national key subjects and 10 Shanghai key subjects among the ECUST academic units. The total number of full time students has reached 24,500. There are over 15,000 undergraduates and over 9,000 postgraduates, among them 1,541 are PhD students. Furthermore, there are 22,700 students enrolled in College of Continuing Education and College of Distance Education for bachelor degrees.
3. Academic facilities and Scientific research
As one of Garden Units of Shanghai, the university is known for its beautiful surroundings. Occupying more than 1,7 km² in total, East China University of Science and Technology is set within an elegant environment and green scenery. Both university grounds feature rivulets and tree-lined alleyways. The Library of East China University of Science & Technology was established in 1952, currently more than 2,600,000 books and publications are available in the library. Laboratories of ECUST include State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, Key Laboratory of Ultra-fine Materials, Key Laboratory of Advanced Material, Key Laboratory of Safety Science of Pressurized System, Key Laboratory of Coal Gasification, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology. Provincial research centers include Shanghai Key Lab of Chemical Biology, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Advanced Polymeric Materials, Engineering Research Center for Biomedical Materials of Ministry of Education, Engineering Research Center of Large Scale Reactor Engineering and Technology, Engineering Research Center of Process Systems Engineering, Engineering Research Center of Salt Lake Resources Process Engineering, Engineering Research Center of Pharmaceutical Process Chemistry, Engineering Center of Efficient Green Process Equipment and Energy Conservation.
4. Great Achievement
With the enterprise-oriented objective of “to fully improve the students’ overall capability and to cultivate the students’ innovation ability”, East China University of Science and Technology’s continuous reform in educational philosophy, contents, methodology and the improvement of curricula system have enabled it to rank among the best universities in Shanghai for high-quality teaching. Recently, 83 programs of ECUST won the Teaching Award of Universities in Shanghai and that 11 programs won the National Teaching Award. Moreover, it has published 50 textbooks that are awarded National Excellent Textbooks and/or Provincial Excellent Textbooks in recent years. Over the past years, students of ECUST have ranked the first among all universities for winning awards in national and international mathematics competitions; in 1997 and 2005, ECUST students got the top special grade in the American College Students Mathematics Competitions. ECUST students were top ranked in many National and Shanghai competitions in Physics, Foreign Languages, Computer Programming, Electronic Design, Robot Inventing and Scientific Inventions.
5. Communication and international cooperation
East China University of Science and Technology has attached great importance to international cooperation and communication and has established long term collaborations with more than 60 universities, enterprises and research institutes in America, Japan, France, Germany, Britain, Canada, Korea and Australia. ECUST is moving ahead to build an internationally preeminent, brilliantly characteristic, multi-disciplinary and research-oriented first-class university.
