Jinan University, founded in 1906, is the first institution to initiate education of Overseas Chinese. It is one of China’s “One Hundred Key Universities”, directly under Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. 

(1). History 
 
The name of the university "Jinan" comes from "The Tribute of Yu" in the Book of History, one of the Confucian Classics, which reads, "Reaching Eastward to the North and South, we shall spread the culture far and wide". The predecessor of the University was Jinan Academy, which was founded in 1906 by the Qing Goverrment in Nanjing, and then moved to Shanghai. In the year 1927 it was renamed as "Jinan National University." During the Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars, the University operated from Jianyang, Fujian Province and returned to Shanghai in 1946. As the People's Republic of China was being established, in August 1949 it was merged with Shanghai's Fudan and Jiaotong Universities, but by 1958 it had been reestablished as independent institution and moved to the city of Guangzhou in China’s southern province of Guangdong.
 
(2). Discipline and programs 
 
Jinan University has 27 colleges, comprising 58 departments and offering 86 undergraduate major fields. We offer 38 Level-I master degree granting programs, 5 Level-II master degree granting programs and 15 Level-I doctorial degree granting programs and 4 Level-II doctorial degree granting programs. There are 15 post-doctorial research stations, 177 research institutes and 84 labs in Jinan University. The university has 4 national key disciplines, 8 key disciplines of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, 20 Guangdong Province Level-I key disciplines, and 4 Guangdong Province Level-II key disciplines. The university also has a key research base of national humanity & social sciences, a teaching & research base for Chinese language & literature of the Education Ministry, a base for national university cultural quality education, a base of national base for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, an educational base for overseas Chinese education of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and a key research base of humanity & social science of Guangdong Province. Still, the university has 1 national engineering center, 12 ministerial centers (engineering centers of the Ministry of Education) and provincial centers, and 13 key ministerial and provincial key laboratories.
 
(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research
 
Over its long history a galaxy of famous scholars have taught at Jinan, Among these are Ma Yinchu , Zheng Zhenduo , Liang Shiqiu , Zhou Gucheng, Qian Zhongshu , Xia Yan , Xu Deheng , Hu Yuzhi , Yan Jici, Chu Tunan, Huang Binhong and Pan Tianshou. Presently there are 1,819 full time teachers at the university, including two members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, five members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 406 Ph.D. candidate supervisors, 484 professors and 647 associate professors. Up to February 2015, there are 47,518 students, 9,310 of which are full-time master and doctoral students, 22,159 of which are full-time undergraduates and 11,828 of which are Overseas Chinese students, foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Jinan University has been active at academic exchanges, and has established academic cooperation or academic exchange liaison with 252 universities and research institutes in Asia, America, Europe, and Oceania.
