Brief Introduction

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (LNUTCM), founded in 1958, is the only institution for higher learning in Liaoning Province to train and educate professionals in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Chinese Massage, Integration of TCM and Western Medicine in Clinical Practice, Senior Nursing and other related disciplines.

(1). History

Founded in 1958, Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is previously named as Liaoning College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and its predecessor is Liaoning school for advanced studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In August 1958, under the authorization of Liaoning Provincial Government, Liaoning College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established, based on Hospital of Liaoning Province and Liaoning school for advanced studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which turned a new page of higher education in TCM in Liaoning province. During the 7th five-year-plan, the university was established as one of the most focused institutions of TCM constructed by Ministry of Health. In 1997 and 2000 respectively, Liaoning Research Institute of TCM, Liaoning Staff Medical School and Liaoning Research School of Basic Medicine were combined into Liaoning College of TCM sequentially by Liaoning Provincial Government. On Feb.14th, 2006, under the authorization of Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China, the university was formally renamed as Liaoning university of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

(2). Discipline Construction

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (LNUTCM) possesses six disciplines of Medicine, Science, Engineering, Management Arts and Law, including 32 undergraduate majors (or major orientations). Currently, the total enrollment exceeds 10,000 Chinese students and 365 international students. Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has 1 state key discipline, 12 state key disciplines of TCM, 1 Liaoning provincial key discipline (including 12 second-class disciplines), 3 Liaoning provincial upgrading scheme projects, 1 top Liaoning province-level key discipline, 1 Liaoning province-level advanced and specially featured key discipline, 21 Liaoning provincial key disciplines of TCM, 3 post-doctoral programs, 20 programs authorized to grant doctorate degree and 27 programs authorized to grant master degree. 

(3). Campus Overview

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine consists of 17 Schools and Departments and has a main campus located in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province, and two branch campuses in the seaside city—Dalian and Benxi known as Chinese medicine capital. There are 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 2 teaching departments, 2 experiment & teaching centers, 3 research institutes, 2 libraries and 4 museums in the university. Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has 1 state TCM clinical research base, 2 state clinical pharmacology bases, 3 key research centers appointed by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 key lab sponsored by Liaoning Province and the Ministry of Education, 11 Grade III research labs appointed by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 25 provincial key labs and engineering centers.

(4). Affiliated Hospitals

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has many clinical teaching and practicing hospitals for rotation and practicing of international students. There are 6 affiliated hospitals and 4 directly affiliated hospitals of this university. International students can have good practice and internships on these hospitals and receive enough exercises to be qualified as a doctor in the future. These hospitals and professional bases fulfill their functions and perform their duties in clinical treatment, research, teaching, and courses of study. Liaoning Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a Large-scale hospital encompassing medical treatment, medical teaching and scientific research. It has had a grade-A hospital and national TCM model hospital status since 1993. In the in-patient department there are 1,338 beds in 22 separate wards including heart monitoring center, ICU, CCU and interventional therapy units. There are 13,496 hospitalized patients and over 583,584 out-patients annually in the hospital. Now, the hospital, taking its scientific clinical research as its basic theme, is assigning itself the important task of lifting the quality of medical treatment by training to a very high level and developing into an international center for medical treatment, teaching, and TCM clinical research.

(5). Significant Achievements

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has received many honors successively, such as the model institution awarded by National Advanced Association in Discipline Inspections, Supervision and Audit, the National Excellent Grassroots Organization in the Campaign of Establishing Vanguard Grassroots Organizations of CCP and Contending for Excellence, Liaoning Advanced Grassroots Party Organization, Liaoning Advanced Organization, Liaoning Advanced Unit in Spiritual Civilization Construction, May First Labor Award of Liaoning Province, Exemplary University Administrated by Law, Model University with Safe and Civilized Campus, and other awards. Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has undertaken and accomplished dozens of state-level key research projects and hundreds of provincial-level research projects and has published thousands of academic papers and hundreds of academic books. The research funding of LNUTCM is more than 1000 million RMB per year. 

Communication and Cooperation

Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the Chinese universities which are first authorized to recruit international students. Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine pays much attention to develop international contacts. Especially in recent years, Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in international exchange and cooperation has made great strides in development. Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has set up long-term and stable relationships with over 80 well-known universities and institutions in over 20 countries and regions. Until now, more than 5,000 international students from Korea, Japan, U.S.A, Australia, Russia and other regions or countries have graduated from Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with various kinds of diplomas, degrees and certificates in different programs.
