Why Study at Northeastern University, China

Located in Shenyang, the economic center of Northeastern China, Northeastern University (NEU) is a national key university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education, P. R. China. Northeastern University is one of China’s high level universities designated for the state key construction of the "211 Project" and "985 Project". Being a multi-discipline university focusing on engineering, while having kept the edge in traditional disciplines such as mining, material science, metallurgy and mechanical sciences, NEU has made headway in some of the newly rising and cross-disciplinary disciplines such as automation, computer science, and other high-tech disciplines. The discipline of Control Science and Engineering was ranked number one in this discipline in China in the first national first-level discipline assessment by National Academic Degree and Postgraduate Education Development Center. 

(1) History

Northeastern University was founded in April 1923 with a long history of patriotism. The renowned patriot General Peter. H. L. Chang served as the president of NEU from August 1928 to January 1937. After the “September 18th Incident”, NEU was moved to Beijing, Kaifeng, Xi’an and Santai County in Sichuan Province. During this period, the teachers and students proactively participated in the patriotic anti-Japanese movements and became the main power and pioneers in the “December 9th Students Movement”. 

In March 1949, Shenyang College of Technology was formed based the School of Engineering and the School of Science of NEU. In August 1950, Northeastern College of Technology was established based on the combination of Shenyang College of Technology, Fushun Mining College and Anshan Engineering College. In 1960, it was rated as one of the 64 national key universities. NEU was one of the first universities which could confer bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and Ph.D. degrees accredited by the State Council. On March 8th, 1993, Northeastern College of Technology was renamed Northeastern University. In September 1998, Northeastern University became directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education instead of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, China. NEU is among the first group of universities of “Project 211” and “Project 985” of China and jointly built by the Ministry of Education, provincial and municipal governments. 

(2) Discipline and programs

Being a multi-discipline university focusing on engineering, while having kept the edge in traditional disciplines such as mining, material science, metallurgy and mechanical sciences, Northeastern University has made headway in some of the newly rising and cross-disciplinary disciplines such as automation, computer science, and other high-tech disciplines. Northeastern University is composed of Qinhuangdao Branch, Graduate School, 19 schools and Department of Physical Education. There are 3445 ph. D students, 7073 graduate students, 29248 undergraduate students and 1233 international students studying here. At present, there are 189 Master Degree Programs, 108 Doctoral Degree Programs, 17 Post-Doctoral Programs and 16 National Key Disciplines at Northeastern University.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Northeastern University has 2655 teachers and researchers including 528 professors, 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and 9 members of the Discipline Evaluation Board of the State Council. Northeastern University has a big library consisting of a collection of over 2.63 million, 367 items of foreign language publication and 2048 items of Chinese Journals. There are 4 National Engineering (Technology) Research Centers, 3 key State-level laboratories, 3 National Engineering Laboratories and 3 National Science Foundation Innovation Corps at Northeastern University.

(4) Great achievements

Since the 11th "five year plan", Northeastern University has taken on 5600 research projects of national natural fund, national key fundamental research, develop and planning (973project), national high-tech research develop planning (863 project), national technology research, war industry and the cooperation research with enterprises. In 2006, the number of national awards of scientific and technical payoffs of NEU were ranked 6th among the universities in China. NEU has won 180 awards of the state, province and ministry, among which there is one first prize of the national technology progress award and two second prizes. NEU has published over 18424 papers on national and international academic journals and conferences. There are 10479 papers of NEU in the world top three search systems.

(5) Communication and international cooperation

Northeastern University preserves in opening education facing the world. It has established academic international exchange relationship with 198 universities and institutions in 34 countries and regions. Northeastern University employs more than 300 overseas well-known experts to give lectures or to cooperate every year. And there are more than 700 staffs carrying out academic exchanges abroad every year at Northeastern University. At present, there are more than 1233 international students coming from 78 countries and regions studying here.
