Why Study at Renmin University of China

Renmin University of China (RUC) is a comprehensive research university, focusing on humanities and social sciences. Its scope also covers natural sciences, information technology and environmental sciences. The pursuit of truth and progress has always been the university’s overriding task. Ever since it was established in 1937, Renmin University of China has developed into an important base for training high caliber professional in social sciences and humanities, as well as a major center for research activities in these fields. At present, the university offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and post-doctoral programs in social sciences and humanities and is one of the country’s leading producers of research results in these fields.
 
(1). History 
 
Renmin University of China is a research oriented comprehensive university focusing on humanities and social sciences. It is directly under the Ministry of Education of China and is jointly financed and supported by China’s Ministry of Education and the Beijing Municipal government. It can be traced back to Shanbei Public School, founded in 1937 in the midst of Anti-Japanese War. Later it became the North China United University, and then North China University. On December 16th, 1949, advised by the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the 11thAdministrative Meeting of the National Administration Council passed “The Resolution on the Establishment of Renmin University of China”. On October 3rd, 1950, the North China University was renamed as Renmin University of China. It was the first modern university founded by the People’s Republic of China. Since its founding in 1937, the total number of Renmin University of China graduates in Renmin University has exceeded 250, 000. RUC alumni have played an active role and earned great achievements in government, academia, and various sectors including finance, communication, and education. 
 
(2). Discipline and programs
 
Renmin University of China (RUC) is a comprehensive research university focusing on humanities and social sciences. Renmin University of China is one of the “211” and “985” Project universities. Renmin University of China consists of 26 schools, 14 interdisciplinary research institutes. Besides, Renmin University of China also has School of Physics, School of Continuing Education, and School of Education & Training. It has a satellite campus in Suzhou and a Research Institution in Shenzhen. Renmin University of China offers 75 bachelor degree programs, 4 secondary bachelor degree programs, 187 master degree programs (including 37 master degree programs autonomously offered by RUC), 125 Ph.D. degree programs (including 33 Ph.D. degree programs autonomously offered by RUC). Renmin University of China has 20first-level discipline programs that are entitled with the Ph.D degree and 18mobile centers for post-doctoral research. Till 2015, there are 24992 full-time students in Renmin University of China. Among full-time students, there are 11497 undergraduate students, 8327 graduate students, 3567 Ph.D. students , and 1,468 international students. Popular disciplines at Renmin University of China include but not limited to business, finance, history, economics, law, education, rural development, journalism, sociology, statistics psychology etc. 
 
(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research 
 
At present, Renmin University of China has 13 Key Research Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences, ranking the first in terms of number. Renmin University of China has eight national State-Level First-Class Key Subjects, eight State-Level Second-Class Key Subjects, five Beijing Municipal-Level First-Class Key Subjects, four Beijing Municipal-Level Second-Class Key Subjects and one Beijing Municipal-Level Key Interdisciplinary Subject. The University library has 2.5 million holdings, and is recognized as the Information Center of Arts Literatures by the Ministry of Education. The new library building opened in the second half of 2011. The Library of Renmin University of China consists of two buildings with area of 56,000 square meters. The Library holds 4.503 million volumes and more than 300 databases.
 
(4). Renmin University of China Achievement
 
Renmin University of China is entitled 25 national key disciplines, ranks No.5 of China, 13 national key research bases of humanities and social sciences, ranks No.1 of China, and 6 national teaching and research bases of fundamental arts disciplines, ranks No.1 of China. The Renmin University of China Press is one of the most famous publishers and the first university press in China which has published a large number of academic works in humanities and social sciences. Many graduates of Renmin University of China have raised high within the communist party, and the university is home to many outstanding scholars in law, economics, and journalism. RUC alumni have played an active role and earned great achievements in government, academia, and various sectors including finance, communication, education, etc. According to the 2013 Chinese University Evaluation Report 2013, Renmin University of China alumni number tops the List of Chinese Central Committee Members, ranks the second in the List of Scientists in Humanities and Social Sciences, and the third in the List of Distinguished Alumni, the List of Important Statesmen, and the List of Donation.
 
(5). Communication and international cooperation
 
Renmin University of China builds an important bridge for the communication between east and west. It offers a stage for the international communication and exchange. Renmin University of China has established academic exchange relationships with about 225 universities and research institutions from 54 countries and regions in the world, which enables the University to be the center of academic and cultural communications between China and foreign countries. Many famous scholars have given lectures or attended special seminars in Renmin University, including the Nobel Prize in Economics winners Robert Mundell, Joseph E. Stiglitz, Michael Spence, John Forbes Nash, Edmund S. Phelps Myron Scholes and Reinhard Selten. Currently, Renmin University of China hosts about 1,165 international students from different countries all over the world.
