Shaanxi University of Science and Technology is a provincial level university, the only multi-disciplinary higher educational institution west of China focusing on light industry needs. Shaanxi University of Science & Technology is a member of the Foundation Construction Project for the Midwest China universities. This new government project is aimed at strengthening 100 of higher educational institutions mid-west of China, and is offering five-year grants for educational quality improvement.
(1) History
Established in Beijing in 1958 as Beijing Institute of Light Industry it was under the administration of State Ministry of Light Industry. The University was the first institution covering educational needs of Chinese light industry. In 1970 The University was renamed to Northwest Institute of Light Industry and moved to Xianyang City in Shaanxi Province. It was in 1978 when it was recognized as one of 88 key universities in China by the State Council. Approved in 2002 by the Ministry of Education, the University acquired its present name - Shaanxi University of Science and Technology - and in 2007, it was moved to a new campus in Xi’an, the capital city of Shaanxi Province (state), one of the world’s renowned historical capitals. Located north of Xi’an and 2.6 km from Xianyang International Airport, 3 km from Xi’an Bullet Train Station, Shaanxi University of Science & Technology enjoys a unique geographical location, covering an area of 137 hectares.
(2) Discipline and programs
Over the period of 50 years, Shaanxi University of Science & Technology enjoys the alumni of more than 60,000 highly qualified specialists, among which are executives, technical personnel, teachers or researchers of leading research institutions or business leaders in various fields. Shaanxi University of Science & Technology offers programs in seven major disciplines, including engineering, science, management, literature, law, medicine, and economics. This comprises 58 bachelor degree programs, 71 master and 17 doctoral degree programs. Currently, altogether 1200 teachers provide quality educational and training services to 23,000 full-time undergraduate students and 2,700 graduate students. Besides, it has established 3 post-doctoral programs since 2007 in Materials Science and Engineering, Light Industry Technology and Engineering, and Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
(3) Academic facilities and scientific research
Shaanxi University of Science & Technology has 10 colleges, 3 teaching departments, 30+ research institutes, 40+ laboratories, and other facilities, such as libraries, student dormitories, canteens, gymnasiums, and two large outdoor swimming pools. It enjoys 6 provincial level key disciplines, 16 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories and engineering centers. Finally, it has acquired seven nation-level famous program specialties: Leather Chemistry and Engineering, Pulp and Paper Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Mechanical Design and Theory, Materials, Packaging Engineering, and Materials Physics and Chemistry.
(4) Communication and international cooperation
Shaanxi University of Science & Technology attaches great importance to international academic exchange and cooperation. It has built long-term cooperative relationships with over 30 prestigious foreign universities and institutions mainly from the United States, Poland, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Italy, UK, Germany and Australia, etc.
