Brief introduction
Shanghai University of Political Science and Law (SHUPL) was founded in 1984, situated at the foot of Sheshan Mountain--the famous scenic resort in Shanghai, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law (SHUPL) is known as the “garden institute”, with an area of over 72 hectares and floor area of 210,000 sq. m. With the tenet of “all for students”, SHUPL attaches great importance to giving full play to students’ potential and individualism, offering every opportunity in academic innovation and free choice of learning, fostering their sense of social responsibility and capability to create and practice. With the key discipline of law, the university now has a multidisciplinary system composed of politics, economics, sociology, management, language and literature.
1. History
Shanghai University of Political Science and Law was established in 1984, SHUPL is situated in the well-known Sheshan Mountain scenic area, and it covers an area of 1078.6 mu (about 72 hectares). SHUPL features practicality and application. It educates personnel of various disciplines at multiple levels. Guided by a scientific development outlook, SHUPL is becoming a high level liberal arts university with distinctive features and producing intellectuals with practical skills. The law study in SHUPL is listed as one of the top five universities in Shanghai. The university is also “Shanghai Training Base for Elire Legal Talents” and“Shanghai Training Base for International Elire Legal Talents”, and therefore is one of the double bases of the five universities in Shanghai.
2. Discipline and programs
Shanghai University of Political Science and Law now has 12 academic schools, and other teaching departments include the Graduate School, Department of Physical Education, Network and Modern Education Technology Center, and Vocational Training Center. SHUPL has started graduate program, now has three master programs: law theories, constitutional and administrative law studies, and criminology. The university is authorized to award master’s degree of law. Also the university has more than 30 undergraduate programs: law, penology, intellectual property, economics, business administration, financial management, international economics and trade, auditing, economics and finance, sociology, social work, labor and social security, applied psychology, politics and administration, international politics, public administration, Chinese language and literature, journalism, television broadcasting, English, Russian, ideological and political education. There are seven associate-degree programs including legal affairs etc. and three programs (law study, public administration and penology) for students who upgrade from an associate degree to a bachelor’s degree. There are more than 10,000 fulltime students in the university.
3. Academic facilities and Scientific research
Shanghai University of Political Science and Law has an outstanding faculty, 40% of its faculty members are above associate professor level. Over 84% of its faculty members are masters or even doctors. Eight of its faculty members are qualified supervisors for doctorate candidates, over 48 of its faculty members are qualified supervisors for master candidates. Many of SHUPL’s faculty members play a leading role in national academic organizations. SHUPL enjoys advanced and adequate teaching facilities which include training classrooms for Mock UN, International Politics and Public Affairs, International Strategic Security Database, computing center, language labs, simulated trial courtrooms, criminal investigation labs, international trade labs and short hand training classroom. Ever since 1999, the university has been awarded Shanghai Garden Unit every year. It has also been the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Shanghai Model Unit.
4. Great Achievement
In 2009, Shanghai University of political Science and Law was awarded Shanghai outstanding Unit for Cultural and Ideological construction. The University has also invited over 100 well known specialists and scholars to serve as honorary professors and guest professors. The law study in SHUPL is listed as one of the top five universities in Shanghai. The university is also “Shanghai Training Base for Elire Legal Talents” and“Shanghai Training Base for International Elire Legal Talents”, and therefore is one of the double bases of the five universities in Shanghai. The two undergraduate programs of penology and social work are nationally characteristic majors. Our administrative law, criminology and economics are key disciplines in Shanghai. Administrative law and criminal sociology are funded by the national government. The university is well-known for its law study (in the direction of criminal justice), penology, social work, law, and international politics in Shanghai. Legal education has a national field school. In the meantime, in August 2015, SHUPL, together with Qinghua University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and China University of Political Science and Law, is listed by the Supreme Court as one of the judicial research bases of “One Belt, One Road”.
5. Communication and international cooperation
Shanghai University of Political Science and Law attaches great importance to international exchanges. It has established exchange relations with many institutions and universities from countries and regions like the United States, France, Japan and Hong Kong.
