Shantou City, China – SUMC Located City

Shantou city is located at the southeast of Guangdong Province, China and on the verge of the China South Sea. Shantou City is one of the original five Special Economic Zones in China. It remains eastern Guangdong’s economic center, and is home to Shantou University, a member of the Project 211 group. The city is a well-known home place of origin for many overseas Chinese and has its own unique cuisine, culture and dialect. 

Long History

Shantou was a fishing village part of Tuojiang City, Jieyang District during the Song Dynasty. It came to be Xialing during the Yuan Dynasty. With the development of history, Shantou city currently has become an important port in South China.

Economy and Industry

Shantou’s economy is medium by Guangdong standards. Manufacturing accounts for a large and increasing share of employment. Canning, garments, lithography, plastic, and toys are some of the principal products. Toy manufacturing is the city’s leading export industry, with 400 million U.S. dollars worth of exports each year.

Shantou Free Trade Zone lies at the south part of Shantou city. It has been comprehensively developing export processing, storage, international trade, finance and information industry. Its goal is to establish a modernized international zone that is open to the overseas by drawing experience from international free trade zone.

Geographic Location

Shantou locates in the east of Guangdong Province and in the south of the Hanjiang River Delta. Shantou City has always been an important transportation hub, an import and export port and a commodity distribution center in East Guangdong, South Jiangxi and Southwest Fujian, and known as the “Communication Center of South China and Gateway of East Guangdong”.

Convenient Transportation

As an important port in South China, Shantou takes the responsibility for the transportation of the import-export cargo to eastern Guangdong, southwestern Fujian Province and Southern Jiangxi. 

Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport is an airport serving the cities of Jieyang, Shantou, Chaozhou and nearby areas in eastern Guangdong Province, China. It was part of a relocation plan from the original Shantou Waisha Airport, and the site was chosen to be near the geographic center of Jieyang, Shantou, and Chaozhou. 

Excellent Education

Shantou education has a long history, and it was known as “Zou and Lu on the seaside” (means high quality education) since Song Dynasty. Shantou city actively develops international communication and cooperation and improves the educational level. 

Pleasant Climate

Shantou City locates on the southeast coast of Guangdong Province. Its coastline goes from the northeast to the southwest. Shantou is warm and humid with sufficient sunlight and rainfall as well as a long frost-free period. Spring in Shantou is humid with long rainy days. Early summer features rising temperature and changing weathers with occasional rainstorms. In the midsummer, the temperature is high but the heat is not unbearable. Autumn is cool and dry in Shantou. Winter is free from severe coldness; however chill weather will keep up for brief periods.
