Why Study at Wuhan Sports University, China

Wuhan Sports University's origins can be traced back to Zhongnan Institute of Physical Education, in Nanchang City, Jiang Xi Province. Wuhan Sports University covers an area of more than 90 hectares. Its many sports facilities, such as the Asian Boating Training Center, Sports Training and Testing Center, internet facility and others, which serve the varied needs of competitive sports. At WSU, there are all kinds of indoors and outdoors sports buildings, class-- rooms buildings, and advanced research facilities. 

(1) History

Wuhan Sports University is formally as Zhongnan Institute of Physical Education which formed in 1953. Shortly after, in 1955, the institute moved to its present site in Wuhan, Hubei Province, and changed its name to Wuhan Institute of Physical Education in February of 1956. Wuhan Sports University was formerly administered by the National General Administration of Sports and, now it is under the aegis of both the National General Administration of Sports and the Hubei Provincial Government.

(2) Discipline and programs

Wuhan Sports University is organized into 15 schools and departments. Wuhan Sports University has 26 undergraduate programs in physical education and related fields. There are 8 programs at the master level, one at the doctoral level and one post-doctoral station at Wuhan Sports University. Currently 12504 Chinese students and as many as 36 international students enrolled at Wuhan Sports University.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Among Wuhan Sports University’s faculty, there are a number of experts and trainers who are well known in China and abroad. Altogether, Wuhan Sports University has a staff of 812, of which over 500 are professional teachers and coaches. And, of these, over 60 are professors, researchers and national coaches; 165 are associate professors. Wuhan Sports University has 6 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories and key research bases and 2 provincial collaborative innovation center platforms. Furthermore, books in the library are up to more than 970,000 volumes.

(4) Great achievements

Wuhan Sports University has undertaken many research projects under the sponsorship of the National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation and has also undertaken key, provincial, research projects. Wuhan Sports University has received a number of science and technology achievement awards and the national invention patents. In December 2001, the National General Administration of Sports gave WSU the designation of “Key Research Base for Sports Social Science.” In July 2003, Hubei Education Department gave the institute the designation of “Hubei Province Sports Industry Research Center.” Students graduate from Wuhan Sports University won 326 gold medals, 236 silver medals, 269 bronze medals in international and domestic matches such as the Olympic Games, Asian Games, and National Games. Wuhan Sports University is recipient “Award for Contributions to Success in Sports” issued by the National General Administration of Sports, and has been designated as “National, Elite Athletes’ Training Base for Boating” and the “National Training Base for Chinese Martial Arts for Young Athletes.”

(5) Communication and international cooperation

International academic exchange is another area to which the institute has attached great importance. So far, Wuhan Sports University have established relationship on exchange and cooperation with more than 20 universities and institutions in United States, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ukraine, Japan, and Vietnam. Currently 36 international students enrolled at Wuhan Sports University.
