Why Study at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China

Brief Introduction

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is a young university based in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. Founded in 2006 and resulting from a partnership between the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University, it is the first Sino-British University between research led universities, exploring new educational models for China. The University primarily focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture and Business with a secondary focus in English, recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a "not for profit" educational institution. Students are rewarded with a University of Liverpool degree as well as a degree from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The teaching language is English.

(1). History 

On September 28, 2004, Emerson was made President of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool signed a cooperative agreement to set up Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Construction started in August 2005 and the university was officially inaugurated on May 29 of 2006.

More than 160 undergraduates enrolled in the first year. This number has increased over the last six years to a total of 7,000 students on campus and a further 2,000 at the University of Liverpool.

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s first batch of students graduated in August 2010. 97% of them continued their studies overseas for a master's degree or a doctorate and 10% of those went to study in the world’s top ten universities (based on the University Ranking Chart by The Times, 2010). December 2010 saw Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University invest 6 million RMB in research for academic performance. By January 2011, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University headed the list of Top 10 Sino-Foreign Cooperative universities in China.

(2). Discipline and programs 

At Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University all 35 bachelors and 30 masters programs are taught in English by world-class international faculty from over 50 countries. The University primarily focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture and Business with a secondary focus in English.

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University looks to draw first-tier students from China and abroad to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. At present, the University has over 8,000 registered students (including those who are completing study at the University of Liverpool). There are currently almost 60 degree programs in the fields of science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, language, culture and all are taught in English except for general & basic courses.  

(3). Academic facilities and Scientific research 

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has a diverse and talented group of four-hundred and fifty academic staff in academic departments, who bring expertise from both academic and industry experience. Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Library develops its collection by focusing on subject development and research requirements. With over 90% of the printed collection being academic books in English, the collection is well balanced among science, engineering, business and management and arts. Currently, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Library holds over 500,000 books, 213 different types of Chinese magazines and periodicals, more than 130 periodicals published overseas and 55 kinds of newspapers.

By virtue of being able to draw on the high-quality resources of two highly regarded parent universities, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has constructed a series of first-class research facilities such as state-of-the-art Biological Science Labs. Since it was founded several years ago, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has undertaken more than 50 research programs all the way from municipal and provincial up to the national level. It was chosen as a member unit of the national “863 Program” in 2012.  

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University boasts an outstanding research team who are constantly looking for improvements, on a global scale, to current social, economic and technological problems - always keeping them ahead of the rest.

(4). Great achievements 

Students of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University have a commendable presence at a host of international competition events such as the Mathematic Contest in Modeling and IBM University Business Challenges, with remarkable success; Among the first cohort of graduates, 96% were admitted into world-famous universities for postgraduate and doctoral studies, of them more than 10% into universities ranking among the top 10 in the world (according to The Times University Ranking 2010); 90% of graduates from the second cohort received postgraduate admission certificates from well-known universities in the world and among them 10% advanced into top 10-ranking universities (according to The Times University Ranking 2011); There were also students who were employed or served internships in world-leading companies, including Morgan Stanley, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Standard Charted Bank, HSBC Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Ernst & Young and KPMG. 

(5). Communication and international cooperation 

Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University upholds the same high standards as world-famous universities in hiring faculty members. It currently has 500 academic staff, 80% of them holding foreign nationality and all subject staff has to hold a Doctorate degree from a well-known university in the world and have rich teaching and research experience. In 2011, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University began to cooperate with international head hunting companies to hire top-notch talents from all over the world. For instance, Professor David O’ Connor, President of British Society for Proteome Research has joined Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University as a full-time member.
