Brief Introduction
Xi’an University of Science and Technology (XUST) lies in Xi’an, a world famous city with numerous ancient and historical sites and remains. Its head campus- Yanta campus stands blocks away from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda well known at home and abroad and its newly built Lintong campus close to another popular tourist resort Huaqing Hot Springs. Shaanxi provincial CPC Committee and Shaanxi provincial government and the Xi’an municipal government officially recognize the university as the Model University and Garden Campus respectively. As one of the key construction high-level universities in Shaanxi province, XUST is also the “Excellent Engineers Education and Training Plan” university approved by Ministry of Education.
1. History
Xi’an University of Science and Technology has a relative history, the earliest history started from the North Ocean University, which was founded in 1895. In July 1938, the Industry faculty of North Ocean University merged with Mining and Metallurgy faculty of Northwest University. In 1957, the Mining and Metallurgy faculty of Northwest was distributed to Xi'an Jiaotong University. On September 15, 1958, the Xi'an Mining Industry College was founded on the foundation of mining industry faculty and geology faculty of Xi'an Jiaotong University. The former president of China Academy of Science Guo Moro named the college. With the approval of the Education Ministry of China, the college was distributed to the Government of Shaanxi Province and the name of the college was changed to Xi'an University of Science and Technologies in June 1999.
2. Discipline and Programs
Xi’an University of Science and Technology has Yanta canpus and Lintong campus covering the area of 1,080.000 m2. The present full-time undergraduates are over 23000, postgraduates and doctoral students are over 4200. It sets 18 colleges and departments and graduate school. The 56 undergraduate programs, 85 postgraduate programs, 32 doctoral programs and 6 post-doctoral programs give students a diverse choice in academic study, feature the disciplines in Safety, Geological Minerals and its relevant parts, construct the teaching system focusing on engineering, together with the harmonious development in engineering, science, literature, management, laws, economics, and arts. Particularly, Safety Technology and Engineering is the national key discipline. There are 8 provincial preponderant disciplines covering 46 subordinate disciplines, 3 national and 11 provincial characteristic disciplines, and 2 provincial bilingual model courses.
3. Academic Facilities and Scientific Research
Xi’an University of Science and Technology invests and develops the academic education and scientific researches with many years. Over 2000 school faculty, 1200 professional lectures(over 1000 hold Master or PhD Degrees), 500 professors and associate professors works for the development. Particularly, it has a famous teaching and research talents group, which contains 2 Distinguished Professors of “Yangtze River Scholars Program”, 4 national candidates of “Talents Project”, 11 provincial talents project candidates, 3 Distinguished Professors of Shaanxi Sanqin Scholars, 24 experts of Shaanxi 100-Talents Program, and 10 Shaanxi Youth Talents Stars. In the hardware facilities, it has built 16 ministerial and provincial research platforms, 1 innovation team under Ministry of Education, 1 national and 15 provincial talents training mode’s creative experimental zone, 2 national and 14 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers. XUST library attracts students and scholars to its rich and extensive print and online collections gathered during its long history. With over 2.5 million collected literature(include 1.13 million E-books), 2000 journals and 13000 E-journals, the library forms a multidisciplinary collected literature characterized in safety technology and engineering and emphasized on computer, communication, electrical automation, mechanical, materials, geology, environment, architecture. There are 20 Chinese database, such as mineral engineering digital library, coal digital library, new oriental multimedia study database, CNKI, Duxiu Database, Scholars’ family digital library, and wanfang data. Besides, the library has introduced 9 foreign database like the Elsevier database, PQDT Master and PhD papers database, Ei, Springerlink, ACM, ASCE, ASME.
4. Great Achievement
Xi’an University of Science and Technology is a pillar in the science and engineering education. Since 2011, it has been in charge of over 4200 scientific research projects, including over 220 national projects valued 590 million yuan and awarded 3 national prizes for progress in science and technology, 150 ministerial and provincial sci-tech achievements, and 2100 approved patents. From 2007 to 2010, there were 1205 papers included in SCI, EI, ISTP.

Xi’an University of Science and Technology is committed to making a difference to the world everyone lives in. It carries out advanced research and innovation through international collaboration to maximize global impact. It has built a steady and friendly cooperation with 60 universities and colleges from over 20 countries like US, UK, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, and Japan. As one of the founders of “1+2+1 Sino-US Talents Training Plan”, it has opened various international joint education programs, such as “3+1+1 Sino-US Undergraduates and Graduates Connected Program”, “1+2+1 Sino-US Double Degrees Program”, “Work and Travel US”, “4+1 Sino-UK Postgraduates Program”, International Students Short-Term Study, etc..
