Brief Introduction

Xidian University is a key national university under the Ministry of Education of China. It focuses primarily on electronics and information education and research, and also offers a wide range of academic subjects covering engineering, science, management, economics, arts and social sciences. It has been approved by the state to be one of the universities funded by “Project 211” and it is one of the 55 universities having a Graduate School, one of the 35 universities having a national demonstration School of Software and one of the 15 universities having an IC Talents Training Center. It is an essential base of IT talents training and high level scientific research innovation. 

For nearly 80 years since its foundation, Xidian University has produced over 100,000 graduates and postgraduates in the fields of engineering and technology. In the new era of knowledge economy and in the digital age, Xidian University is making great efforts to build itself into an open research university with distinctive features, aiming to be first-class in China and well-known in the world.  

1. History 

Xidian University was founded in 1931 in Ruijin, Jiangxi as the Radio School of the Central Military Committee. It was the first technical school established by the Communist Party of China. Later, the school was moved from Zhangjiakou, Hebei to Xi'an in 1958. It was one of the first 20 national key universities in 1959. It was renamed the People's Liberation Army Institute of Telecommunication Engineering in 1960. In 1966, it was renamed Northwest Institute of Telecommunication Engineering, and was no longer a military institute. In 1988, its name was changed to Xidian University.

2. Discipline and programs

At present, Xidian university has 7 national key disciplines, 50 doctoral programs, 101 master’s programs and 52 undergraduate programs. In the fields of communication networks, signal and information processing, information security, microelectronics and mechatronics, Xidian possesses distinctive advantages and features in cultivation and scientific research at home and abroad. In the national assessment of the first-level disciplines in China in 2012, its “information and communication engineering” ranked the second and its “electronic science and technology” ranked the fourth.

3. Academic facilities and Scientific research 

Xidian University has a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research as is demonstrated by the number and variety of its study facilities. They include: four national laboratories and over 30 research institutes and research centers. The facilities of 75 research laboratories, a multimedia video-audio center, training workshops and 4 experimental centers are essential for teaching. About 80% of faculties hold positions in the research activities. Xidian's library has an inventory of over one million books. The computer communications network of the university provides access to national and international universities.

National Key Laboratories: As one of the major academic research centers in China, Xidian University possesses a range of state- of -the -art facilities to support teaching and research. Some of them are provided centrally as National Key Laboratories. These include: National Key Laboratory of Integrated Services Network, National Key Laboratory of Radar Signal Processing, National Key Laboratory of Antennas and Microwave Technology, National Key Laboratory of Wide-band Gap Semiconductor Technology.

Research Institutes: Xidian University's distinguished reputation in research is reflected in the strength of its current research institutes and their activities. Xidian University's particular feature of research is the number, variety and vigor of its multi-disciplinary research team. This team consists of the following research institutes: Institute of Information Science, Institute of Information Security and Privacy, Institute of Signal and Data Processing, Institute of Software Engineering, Institute of Computer Peripherals, Institute of Multimedia, Institute of Electronic CAD, Institute of Microelectronics, Institute of Antennas and EM Scattering.

4. Great achievements 

In the 2006 Ranklist of Top Engineering B.S. Programs of Chinese Universities, the Telecommunications Engineering in Xidian University ranked No.1, the Electronic Engineering ranked No.2 and the Information Processing Technology ranked No.1.

In the 2008 Ranklist of Top Engineering B.S. Programs of Chinese Universities, the Telecommunications Engineering in Xidian University ranked No.2, the Electronic Engineering ranked No.3, the Information Processing Technology ranked No.1, the Mechanical Designing and Manufacturing Automation ranked No.5.

According to the statistics of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, from August 2003 to September 2013, the total number of citations of papers in Engineering area of Xidian University ranked No.191 globally and was No.14 in China.

5. Communication and international cooperation 

In recent years, Xidian has been implementing the Internationalization Initiative Program to improve the cultivation quality and upgrade the education level. Up till now, Xidian has established cooperative relationships with over 100 universities and institutions in more than 80 countries. 54 joint laboratories have been founded with multinational corporations, including Microsoft, IBM, Intel, SAP, TI, AD, etc. Faculty mobility is ever more frequent. More than 1500 faculties home and abroad participate in the international academic exchange per year. Nearly 7% Xidian students study abroad annually through various collaborative education programs, such as 3+X, double master degree etc. More than 600 foreign students from 43 countries study at Xidian. Two Chinese-foreign cooperative undergraduate programs have been approved. One is with Polytech Nantes in France, and the other is with Heriowatt University in Britain. In 2014, Xidian ranks among the top 100 worldwide in the number of published papers in engineering disciplines according to ESI database.
