Why Study at Beijing Jiaotong University, China

Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) formerly known as Northern Jiaotong University) is a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. The university has been closely connected with the nation’s railway industry since its establishment. The faculty and students of BJTU have made great contributions to the growth of China’s railways.  BJTU is one of the first universities selected into the “National 211 Project” and the “985 Strength Discipline Innovation Platform” project, one of the first institutions authorized to confer masters and doctoral degrees. BJTU accommodates 14 academic schools, 2 vocational colleges and 1 independent college. BJTU has 2,952 faculty and staff members including 1,790 full-time teachers. To date the University has 13,690 undergraduate students, 7,727 graduate students, 2,593 doctoral students, 8,052 professional degree students and 8,324 adult students. There are 1,387 short-term and long-term international students in total.

(1) History 

Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) grew out of Beijing Railway Management Institute, China’s first higher educational institution which was committed to fostering railway management talents and initiated modern China’s education in railway management and telecommunication. The Nanyang Public School which was predecessor of Jiaotong University, was founded in 1909, one year later 1910 the school of Railway Management was founded. In 1917, the School of Railway Management was restructured into Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing Posts and Telecommunications School. In 1921 together, Shanghai Industrial Technical School, Tangshan Industrial Technical School, Beijing Railway Management School and Beijing Posts and Telecommunication School merged into Jiaotong University with three branch schools based in Beijing, Shanghai and Tangshan. In the same years university was named Jiaotong University Beijing School. The University adopted the name of Beiping Jiaotong Management School of Jiaotong University in 1928. In 1949, Beiping Railway Management College, Tangshan Industrial College, and Huabei Jiaotong College merged together to establish China Jiaotong University. In 1950s, China Jiaotong University changed its name into Northern Jiaotong University, Dr. MAO Yisheng, a famous expert in bridge engineering was appointed as President of the University, and the university was affiliated to the Ministry of Railways. In September, 2003, it was once again renamed Beijing Jiaotong University to make its favorable locality explicit. The Shanghai campus has since separated into two universities which are now Shanghai Jiaotong University and Xi'an Jiaotong University, with a further sister branch in Nanchang.

(2) Discipline and programs

To date Beijing Jiaotong University has, 14 schools and departments with several programs including sciences, technology, engineering, and arts, National Key disciplines , Beijing Municipal Key Disciplines. The schools and departments that make up Beijing Jiaotong University are: School of Electronics and Information engineering, School of Computer and Information Technology, School of Economics and Management, School of Traffic and Transportation, school of Civil Engineering, School of Mechanical, Electronic and Control Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Science, School of Humanities and social Sciences, School of Law, School of Languages and Communication Studies, School of Software Engineering, School of Architecture and Design, School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education. The university has 57 undergraduate programs, 34 masters programs, 13 categories of professional Master Degree Programs, 20 Doctorate Programs, and 15 Mobile workstations for post-doctoral research. There are 13690 Undergraduate Students, 7727 Graduate Students, 2593 Doctoral Students and 1387 International Students. 

(3) Academic facilities and Scientific research 

Beijing Jiaotong University has 22 research institutes and research centers, and 39 laboratories which include the transportation system simulation laboratory and transportation automation laboratory, which are the best of their kinds in China. The university library has a million books, 3000 Chinese and foreign journals, as well as numerous documents on microfiche, audio- and video-documents on various modern media. BJTU facilities include transmitter tower, TV station, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, gym, arboretum, moot courts, museum, art gallery, railway line, and stadium. There are 2842 faculty members and scientists at the university among whom are 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 286 full professors, and 588 associate professors. Based on the above facilities the university is ranked among the universities with attractive and good learning environment in China.  

(4) Beijing Jiaotong University Achievement

BJTU has successfully made PCT international patent application for first time. BJTU has achieved breakthrough in US patent licensing, Australia intellectual property rights registration, integrated circuit layout designs registration, etc. In 2013, BJTU ranks 44th among Chinese Universities in terms of the number of granted patents. Recently, BJTU has received different awards such as Golden Bridge Award from China Technology Market, Golden Bridge Award from Beijing Technology Market and Beijing Patent Demonstration Institution. In terms of technology BJTU has made remarkable  achievements in Communication based train control system (CBTC) technology industrialization, Urban rail transit energy-fed power supply and traction equipment development and engineering application demonstration project, identification network system, invention patent “Cryogenic big diameter magnetic liquid sealed device”, behaviors based urban traffic flow time, communication based key technology and application of urban rail transit control system, and in key technology and application of magnet fluid sealing under complicated working conditions. 

(5) Communication and international cooperation

BJTU has both domestic and international cooperation with government institutions, private institutions and NGOs. BJTU has established cooperative relations with more than 200 renowned universities, institutions and high-tech companies from 37 countries. The joint Confucius Institutes with GROUP T in Belgium, Texas Southern University in the U.S. and State University of Campinas in Brazil are becoming the bases to actively spread Chinese culture. BJTU has signed over 103 strategic cooperation agreements with enterprises in the field of transportation, logistics, information, energy and other industries and local governments to carry out long-term and extensive cooperation in the field of talents cultivation and scientific researches.
