Founded in 1958, Dalian Polytechnic University is located in the beautiful, romantic and fashionable city- Dalian and it is the only multidisciplinary university in the northeast area of China where six important disciplines have been developing in a harmonious way, including engineer, literature, management, science, economics and art. Engineer is its key discipline, light industry; food, textile and art are all its features. (1) History

Dalian Polytechnic University was founded in 1958 in Shenyang as the Shenyang Institute of Light Industry. In 1970, it was transferred to Dalian, and renamed as the Dalian Institute of Light Industry.  In 2006, it was promoted in 2006 from the rank of institute to the rank of university. In 2007, the school was changed its name as Dalian Polytechnic University.

(2) Discipline and programs

Dalian Polytechnic University is the only multidisciplinary university in the northeast area of China where six important disciplines have been developing in a harmonious way, including engineer, literature, management, science, economics and art. Engineer is its key discipline, light industry; food, textile and art are all its features. Dalian Polytechnic University has 47 bachelor's degree programs, 57 master's degree programs, mainly in the areas of engineering, science, literature, and management discipline, 12 doctorate degree programs, in Textile Science and Engineering, Light Industrial Technology and Engineering, Foodstuff Science and Engineering, and one Post doctoral mobile station. At present, there are more than 20000 Chinese students and 400 international students studying here. 

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Dalian Polytechnic University has a teaching faculty of 958 teachers, of whom 400 are professors and associated professors. Dalian Polytechnic University has 25 province-level and ministry-level scientific research centers, including one national research center of Sea Food Seafood Engineering, one national Engineering Technology transfer center, one national science and technology innovation center, 2 national engineering centers, and 5 key laboratories of Liaoning Province. There are language labs, multi-media classrooms, libraries and other modern teaching facilities in the teaching blocks and school campus which cater for the different needs of international students.

(4) Great achievements

Adhere to the combination of production and research, from 2006 to 2014, Dalian Polytechnic University has undertaken 64 scientific research projects in national level of the 973 or 863 programs and National Natural Science Foundation. The number of published research papers totaled up to 3672, including 465 papers with SCI, EI and ISTP index. 271 patents have been authorized at Dalian Polytechnic University and ranked thirty-fourth in the number of effective patent and patent license in the national colleges and universities in 2008. Dalian Polytechnic University has received 30 science and technology awards in national, provincial and municipal level. 

(5) Communication and international cooperation

Having an international outlook, Dalian Polytechnic University has vigorously pursued international communication and cooperation. At this time, Dalian Polytechnic University has established cooperative relationships with more than 60 universities in more than 20 countries including U.S.A., the U.K., France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea etc. Over 20 undergraduate and graduate exchange programs have been developed between Dalian Polytechnic University and a number of universities and colleges, such as the University of Southampton in Britain and the Institute of Finance and Economics of Mongolia. Dalian Polytechnic University has added resources to develop international student education through assembling a team of qualified teaching faculty, implementing teaching quality guarantees and a monitoring system to ensure teaching quality for international students. Simultaneously, flexible curricula are offered to cater to the different needs of both degree seeking students and non degree seeking students.
