Nanning City, China – Guangxi University Located City

1. Brief Introduction

Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. It is known as the "Green City" because of its abundance of lush tropical foliage. Nanning is located in the southern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, 160 km from the border with Vietnam. It has an area of 22, 293 square kilometers. The city is located on the north bank of the Yong River, the chief southern tributary of the Xi River, and lies some 30 km below the confluence of the Yu and the Zuo rivers. The Yong River (which later becomes the Yu River) affords a good route to Guangzhou and is navigable by shallow-draft junks and motor launches, even though it is obstructed by rapids and sandbanks.

2. Economy

The strategic goal for Nanning on the current stage is to make a frog leap style development in its modernization so as to build itself into an internationalized city and the best place in Guangxi. In 2012, Nanning accelerated the transformation of the economic development models and made new breakthroughs in economic development in a stable and scientific manner with the implementation of many relevant programs as the driving force.

Nanning’s economic development remained stable as a whole. The second industry was the biggest contributor to Nanning’s economic growth. The industrial economy made a new step forward in its development. Nanning positively took different measures to maintain the stable growth, restructure the economic mix and transform the economic development model. As a result, Nanning maintained stable development in its industrial economy generally. In the first 9 months of 2012, the total industrial output value of the enterprises above the designated scale ranked 5th in the 14 cities in Guangxi and 3.37 percentages higher than the average provincial rate.

Agriculture developed steadily. Nanning accomplished the increased income of farmers and the increased yields of agriculture by improving the agricultural facilities, developing the modern agriculture, extending the standardized agricultural production and giving priority to the development of the distinctive and cutting-edged sugar cane, mulberry and silk worm, fruit and vegetables. More input was made from the perspective of science and technology and more profits were hence made. It thus became a new source of income for farmers.

Investment grew steadily. Nanning endeavored to beef up the development in modern industry, Wuxiang District, major infrastructure construction and people’s livelihood. Key projects were advanced, investment structure was improved and the investment scale was enhanced. Mineral resources include gold, iron, manganese, aluminum, quartz, silver, indium, coal, marble, and granite. One third of China's different types of mineral resources are found in Nanning.

3. Higher Education

Nanning is the center of science and technology, education, culture and health in Guangxi Province. There are altogether 54 scientific research institutes subordinate to districts. 10 colleges and 50 trade schools are training specialized personnel of all kinds. Now there are 62 mass cultural organizations, 13 performing groups, 8 cinemas, 285 projecting units, over 70 karaoke halls and over 1000 newsstands. Bookshops and cultural markets can be found everywhere.

4. Favorable Geographical Location

Nanning enjoys a favorable geographical location in Southwestern China, connecting the Indo-China Peninsula to the west and Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, Macao and Hainan Province to the east, making it not only an important economic center along the Beibu Gulf, but also a rapid growing gateway city to Southeast Asia in the southern and southwestern parts of China. The city is only 104, 173 and 204 kilometers respectively to the Ports of Qinzhou, Fangcheng and Beihai, and only 204 and 230 kilometers respectively to the cities of Dongxing and Pingxiang bordering Vietnam. Moreover, it is at both railways and Yongjiang River. Four key railways meet here, namely, Hunan-Guangxi Railway, Guizhou-Guangxi Railway, Litang-Zhanjiang Railway and Nanning-Kunming Railway, making the city an important hub in Southwestern China. The completion of the 2nd Phase Project of dredging Xijiang River enables thousand-ton ships to sail directly from Nanning to Hong Kong and Macao via the Yongjiang River, a branch of the Xijiang River.

As an important gateway to Southeast Asia for Southwestern China, Nanning is a hub, a regional center and an opening city that plays an active role in the communication between China and ASEAN countries. It is becoming a new and booming economic zone and a hotspot for foreign investment in China. With its rapid urban development, Nanning attaches great important to improving natural environment and it enjoys the reputation of “the Green City of China” because of its best green coverage in the country.

5. Transportation

Along the Yangtze River, near the sea and bordering Southeast Asian countries, Nanning has convenient transportation. The city has built perfect three-dimensional traffic network with highway, railway, civil aviation, waterways and several highways directly link the southwestern sea channel. Six high-speed railways gather in Nanning and Xijiang River “Golden Waterway” and other major traffic infrastructure is speeding up the construction. Wuxu International Airport new terminal building opened in 2014. In 2015 (as of May), there were 110 flying routes (including overtime and chartered flights), 75 navigable cities (7 new destinations added in 2015). The number of daily flights taking off and landing reaches more than 230, it basically forms the network pattern covering main cities of ASEAN and China. In the same year, Nanning East Station of high-speed railway was put into use, links 13 provinces and cities nationwide. "12310" Guangxi High-speed Rail economic circle forms centering Nanning; Metro Line 1 will be opened on 2016, Line 2 is speeding up and line 3 was started in 2015. 27 berths have been set up in Nanning Port, the annual handling capacity of 13,660,000 tons. The distance between Nanning and domestic and foreign cities is greatly shortened, which makes exchanges more convenient and brings more driving force for economic and social development.

6. Climate

Nanning has a warm, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid with average highs almost reaching 33 °C in July and August. Winters are mild and somewhat damp with 10 °C average lows in January. It is often windy or breezy and very rainy in the city, with about 1,310 millimeters (51.6 in) of rainfall annually. Nanning is also frost-free for all but 3 or 4 days a year and snowfall is virtually unheard of in the city.

7. Population and Ethnic Groups

Nanning is a city in which Zhuang ethnic group live in compact communities, and also the only city in all the autonomous regions of China with open coastal areas. Thirty-five ethnic groups live in compact communities in Nanning, including people of Zhuang, Han, Yao, Hui, Miao, Dong, and Man minorities

8. Tourism

Nanning is close to scenic Guilin, with its world famous hillscape, northern and western Guangxi and its minority villages, and the border with Vietnam in the south.

Tourist attractions in Nanning include Guangxi Museum, People's Park with the Zhenning Fort, Mount Qingxiu, Guangxi Medicinal Herb Botanical Garden and Yangmei Ancient Town. Other places of interest include Nanhu Park, Shishan Park and Nanning Zoo.
