Hainan Normal University is an academic institution in the process of applying for the right to confer PhDs ratified by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council, and a school that received an “excellent” rating in the nationwide evaluation of undergraduate education monitored by the Ministry of Education. Founded in the autumn of 1949, the university is a key provincial university with a long history, distinctive teacher education and fairly good overall strength. It is located in Haikou City, a beautiful city for seaside tourism with a renowned history and culture.

(1) History 

Hainan Normal University the former National Hainan Teachers College is the first higher education institute on Hainan Island. It was established in the autumn of 1949 on the campus of the former Qiongtai Academy, which boasted a history of more than 300 years. In 1952, a nationwide restructuring of institutes of higher education was initiated, and Hainan Teachers College was renamed Hainan Normal Junior College.  In 1962, Hainan Teacher Training School, Hainan Normal Junior College for Li and Miao Minorities Autonomous Regions, Hainan Industrial Junior College were incorporated into Hainan Normal Junior College, which was then the only normal junior college in Guangdong Province.  In 1986, it was resumed the name Hainan Teachers College.  In 1999, Hainan Institute of Education was merged to it to form the new Hainan Normal College.   In 2007, it was renamed Hainan Normal University by the approval of Ministry of Education.

(2) Discipline and programs 

Hainan Normal University is an academic institution in the process of applying for the right to confer PhDs ratified by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council. Hainan Normal University now has 21schools, 53 undergraduate degree majors, 9 provincial key disciplines, 11 first-level master disciplines and 4 first-level doctoral disciplines. At present, there are over 20,000 Chinese students and 499 international students enrolled at Hainan Normal University.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Hainan Normal University now boasts 869 faculty members, of whom 488 are professors or associate professors, and 537 of which have at least a master’s degree (this number includes 170 PhDs). Moreover, Hainan Normal University teachers include one national “Expert with Outstanding Contributions”, one expert chosen in the first group of the national “Talented Individuals of the New Century”. Hainan Normal University has 4 provincial research bases of humanities and social sciences. With 110,320,000 Yuan worth of teaching and scientific research equipment, the university is home to thirty-two labs, including one key lab co-funded by Hainan Province and the Ministry of Education, one key provincial lab, and five provincial demonstration centers for experimental teaching. The university now has 187 internship bases for various purposes, and the university library has a collection of 1,520,000 paper books and 1,200,000 e-books.

(4) Great achievements

From 2004 to 2013, Hainan Normal University hosted above 362 projects above or at provincial and ministerial level, including 15 projects at state-level (14 projects of National Natural Science Foundation, 1 item of National Social Science Fund Project), won the various research funding having reached 2016.49 million Yuan and got 24 awards of Social Science Award for outstanding achievements in scientific research and Science and Technology Progress Award. From 2002 to 2006, 253 academic books and textbooks were published and 2522 papers were published at academic journals at the provincial level or above, including 849 papers were published at Domestic and international authoritative academic journals and recognized kernel journals and 149 research papers indexed by international authoritative index SCI, EI, and ISTP.

(5) Communication and international cooperation

Hainan Normal University started to enroll international students in 1988. Now it is one of the first schools approved to admit international students by State Education Commission, one of the first Chinese education bases established by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. Hainan Normal University has actively expanded its academic exchange and cooperation efforts. So far, it has established friendly relations with 35 universities and educational institutions abroad, and has collaborated with 5 universities in student-training. At present, there are 499 international students enrolled at Hainan Normal University.
