Harbin Institute of Technology founded in 1920 is a nationally recognized multi-disciplinary research and teaching institution spanning three provinces, Harbin Campus (Heilongjiang), Weihai Campus (Shandong) and Shenzhen Graduate School (Guangdong). Harbin Institute of Technology is a research university and a member of the C9 League, China's Project 211 and Project 985 group in China. (1) History

Harbin Institute of Technology was originally established in 1920 as the Harbin Sino-Russian School for Industry to educate railway engineers via a Russian method of instruction.  On April 2, 1922, the school was renamed the Sino-Russian Industrial University.  On October 20, 1928, the Law College and College of Commerce were incorporated, and the institution was officially named the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT). In June 1950, the administration of HIT was taken over by the Chinese government, which started a period of full-scale reform and growth. In 1951, HIT was approved by the central government to become one of the two institutions of higher learning to learn advanced techniques from the USSR. HIT then became an important base for learning from the USSR and training students for universities throughout the country. HIT enjoyed a reputation as the 'Cradle for Engineers'.  In 1996, HIT was in the first batch of universities to enter the list of Project 211. In November 1999, HIT was appointed by the Central Government as one of the nine best universities to be preferentially built according to the standards of internationally renowned universities. In 2009, Harbin Institute of Technology becomes a member of China University Union (C9) in China.

(2) Discipline and programs 

Harbin Institute of Technology, with science, engineering and research as its core, encompassing management and liberal arts, shall develop into an open, multi-disciplinary, high-ranking and world famous university. Harbin Institute of Technology provides a complete range of disciplines including Philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. It is composed of twenty-two schools, having in all 73 undergraduate programs, 148 master’s programs, 117 doctoral degree programs and 25 Post-Doctoral Programs. Until now, Harbin Institute of Technology has about 43 National Key Disciplines. The university presently has more than 53292 full-time students, including around 12623 students studying for Doctor’s degree and Master’s degree and more than 1922 international students.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Harbin Institute of Technology has a high-level research faculty with over 2,972 full-time teachers and researchers, including 2105 professors and associate professors. Harbin Institute of Technology has a large library at the area of over 41,000 m2, has a collection of over 3.25 million. Harbin Institute of Technology has 3 national level key laboratories, 4 key laboratories of national defense science and technology, 1 national level engineering laboratory, 4 national level engineering research centers, and 47 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories. 

(4) Great achievements

Harbin Institute of Technology was ranked 10th in the Best Global Universities for Engineering by U.S News, 2015.It is one of only ten universities in the world that have designed, built, and launched their own satellites. With a strong emphasis on scientific research, HIT has been bold and innovative in its scientific research and has consistently undertaken large-scale and highly sophisticated national projects.  HIT has made major contributions to the Chinese Shenzhou spacecraft project. In 2010, the Astronautics Innovation Research Center was established at HIT in conjunction with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. In 2012, Harbin Institute of Technology has undertaken more than 4000 items research projects, and the total research funding reaches more than 20 billion CNY. What is more, eight items of projects won national awards for science and technology. In the10 anniversary summary assessment of "863" National Science and Technology Commission high-tech work, Harbin Institute of Technology ranks second among colleges and universities in China according to comprehensive evaluation of university. 

(5) Communication and international cooperation

Harbin Institute of Technology has signed academic cooperation agreements of friendship with 158 institutions of higher education in more than 28 countries. Cooperation and exchanges are carried out between Harbin Institute of Technology and these universities via exchanging students, faculty and research staff, holding academic conference and cooperating in scientific research. There are more than 1922 international students coming from different countries studying at Harbin Institute of Technology.
