Wuhan Union Hospital is a comprehensive teaching hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health, founded by London Missionary Society and the Methodist Churches of Great Britain in 1866. The hospital is affiliated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology Tongji Medical College, consisting of First Clinical College of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Asia Emergency Assistance Center, Emergency Center of Hubei Province, Telemedicine Center of Hubei Province. It has been assessed as “Third-Class-A Hospital”, the first in China. In the past years, it has won a lot of honorable titles such as “National Top 100 Hospital”, “National Advanced unit for Spiritual Civilization Construction”, “National Labor Certificate”.
The hospital is comprised of Main District, Cancer Center (North District), West District and Jinyinhu Union Hospital, with 4800 sick beds in total. It has 43 clinical departments (including 7 state key disciplines, 13 state key specialties, and 14 province key disciplines), 14 medical laboratories, 15 treatment centers.
Currently, Union Hospital has near 5,000 staff and workers. There are nearly 500 medical workers with senior professional title, 94 experts receiving Government Allowance from the State Council, one chief expert for the national 973 project, one "double-employed" academician, two distinguished professors with the title “Changjiang Scholar” from the Ministry of Education, 5 young and middle-aged experts with “Outstanding Contribution” from the Ministry of Health, 5 doctors receiving grants from National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, 8 people with “New Century Excellent Talents” from the Ministry of Education. There are two first-level post-doctoral research stations, one first-level master station, having 136 tutors for doctoral candidates, 368 postgraduate tutors. In the past years, this facility has trained 21,526 students (including doctoral candidates, postgraduates, medical students from Clinical Medicine 8 years, 7 years and 5 years), and more than 200 foreign students. Having 27 state and 7 provincial bases for the standardization training of residents, the hospital has undertaken 53 projects for national continuing medical education, and hosted training sessions for more than 3000 person-times senior medical personnel across the country.
Union Hospital has seven professional research institutes such as Biological Target Laboratory of the Ministry of Education and Province, Hubei Molecular Imaging Laboratory, Hubei Stem Cell Application and Research Center, Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Institute of Hematology. In total, the hospital has 109 laboratories. Since 1979, 343 scientific accomplishments have been achieved, in which 65 reached international advanced level, 278 reached the advanced the leading domestic level. The hospital has obtained three cases of second prize of the National Award for Science and Technology Progress, 15 cases of first prize at provincial and ministerial level, 78 cases of second prize at provincial and ministerial level.
