Nanchang University is a national university situated in central China in Jiangxi province in the Provincial capital of Nanchang which is south of the Yangtze River. Jiangxi is famous as the home of porcelain (china). It is one member of China's Project 211. With the development of international education and international communication and cooperation, there are more and more international students studying here. 

(1) History

The history of Nanchang University could date back to Jiangxi Public Medical School and the National ZhongZheng University which were established in 1921 and 1940 respectively.

In the year of 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi Industrial University merged into the new Nanchang University, from when the name was adopted until now. In 1997, Nanchang University was listed among the Top 100 key universities in China. In the year of 2004, the agreement on jointly developing Nanchang University was signed between the People's Government of Jiangxi Province and the Ministry of Education. NCU entered a new era of reform and development when it merged with Jiangxi Medical College in 2005.

(2) Discipline and programs

Nanchang University hosts a graduate school and 21 undergraduate schools. These schools offer 82 undergraduate majors out of 11 academic disciplines including the liberal arts, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, agriculture, education, general medicine, public health, pharmacy, nursing and four clinical schools. There are282 master programs, 74 Doctoral Programs, 11 post doctorate stations, and 2 National Key Disciplines at Nanchang University. There are currently 37092 Chinese Students and 770 international students studying here.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Nanchang University employs a teaching staff of 2,337, 1593 of whom are professors and associate professors. Nanchang University has a comprehensive library network with a collection of 2.65 million books and 1338 periodicals including foreign language journals and magazines. The library boasts a collection of 61,400 rare books and 93,000 books in foreign languages. Nanchang University boasts 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 2 key laboratories of Ministry of Education, 2 engineering centers of Ministry of Education, 1 key humanity and social science research base of Ministry of Education, 2 high-standard laboratories, and 1 high-standard engineering (technology) research center.

(4) Great achievements

Nanchang University has already undertaken 1419 items of national and provincial scientific research projects and 1419, 217 items of patents have been authorized. There are 1030 papers included in SCI, 706 papers included in EI, 443 papers included in ISTP and 1045 included in CSSCI at Nanchang University. In 2012, 193 items of Projects of National Natural Science Foundation of Nanchang University including one major project have been approved, ranked fifty-ninth in the universities of China. There are 30 projects of National Natural Science Foundation including two major projects have been approved, which ranked nineteenth in the universities of China.

(5) Communication and international cooperation 

Nanchang University earnestly promotes international exchange and cooperation. It has maintained stable exchanges and cooperative relationships with about 60 universities and institutions in over 30 countries and regions. Nanchang University plays leading role in promoting regional culture and has made great efforts to push forward brand-culture construction and innovation. NCU has established art associations like Nanchang Philharmonic Orchestra and Jiangxi Opera Art Research Center. NCU was contracted to hold the 29th International Music Education Conference and creatively developed campus cultural series with Qianhu cultural brand as the main part.
