Brief Introduction

Founded in 1954, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) is one of the oldest institutions in China, earning the distinction as the birthplace of TCM higher education. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) is one of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborative Centers on Traditional Medicine; the university is authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Public Health to be an International Acupuncture Training Center. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) is also a training base for TCM teachers, a center for clinical pharmacology, a training center for overseas education approved by the State Administration of TCM and one of the first authorized TCM universities to enroll and train overseas students. At present, there are about 20,000 students studying on campus, including over 2,000 students who are studying their Master’s and Doctoral degrees, along with over 1,000 overseas students. 
 
(1). History
 
Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, founded in 1954. It goes from Jiangsu Province Traditional Chinese medicine training school, Jiangsu Province Chinese medicine school, Nanjing University of traditional Chinese medicine, Jiangsu new medical college, Nanjing University of traditional Chinese medicine (recovery system) and other historical period, is one of China was founded the earliest higher Chinese Medicine colleges and universities, In 1995, it renamed Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. In 2002, it opened Xianlin Campus. In 2010, it was listed as one of the key construction of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province. In 2011, the school became a higher institution established by Jiangsu Province People’s government and State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine. 
 
(2). Discipline Construction
 
Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine currently offers students three types of degrees: Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. The bachelor’s program specializes in various scopes related to TCM. Some of the specialties include the field of medicine, management, science, economics and letters. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine does also offer other non-TCM specialties as they have a supporting role towards TCM. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine also has 3 post-doctorate research stations, along with 25 programs authorized to grant Doctoral degrees and 44 programs to grant Master’s degrees.
 
(3). Campus Overview
 
Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine includes 2 campuses—the Hanzhong campus and the Xianlin campus. The first campus is located in the western part of the city, adjacent to the historic Black Dragon Lake. The second campus is situated along Xianlin Rd. It is an extensive campus, with digital and eco-friendly designed gardens. Authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology as well as the Ministry of Education respectively, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine serves as a GCP Research Center for New Drugs Development and Engineering Center for Standardization of Chinese Medicine Processing. The library, as a branch of the Chinese Medicine Literature Retrieval Center, has a collection of 900,000 books, 970,000 electronic books, 1,156 journals and over 20,000 electronic journals. 
 
(4). Affiliated Hospitals
 
It boasts 9 directly affiliated schools, 30 affiliated hospitals, and over 100 training and internship bases. It includes Jiangsu Province Hospital of TCM, The second affiliated hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing Hospital of TCM, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of TCM, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, and some other hospitals. 
 
(5). Significant Achievements
 
Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine has produced a great number of prestigious scholars and experts whose reputation has spread both domestically and internationally, including 10 “ Masters of Traditional Chinese Medicine”, and 5 “Academicians of Traditional Chinese Medicine”, accounting for 1/3 and 1/2 respectively of the national totals. Since the university’s foundation, it has cultivated over 30,000 advanced professionals in Chinese Medicine for the country.
 
Communication and Cooperation
 
Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine values International Cooperation and academic exchange. Early in the year of 1993, it initiated a joint Bachelor program with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology of Australia, making the university, the first university of TCM in China to begin international collaboration with a foreign nationally accredited university in the field of TCM higher education. Up till now, there are more than 8000 TCM professionals from over 90 countries that have trained with the International Education College. In 1993, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine pioneered the practice of cooperating with a western university to facilitate the Bachelor program of Chinese Medicine. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine also undertook the first Master program of Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine at government level in 2005.
