Why Study at North China Institute of Science and Technology

Brief Introduction

North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) as the only higher education institute it is accountable to the State Administration of Work Safety. With the rapid development, it aims to construct a modern university characterized in safety and focused on engineering with the harmonious development in management, science, literature, economy and laws. It has the partnership with National Safety Training Center of Coal Mine under the management system of “one institute, two brands”. The National Safety Training Center of Coal Mine (founded in 1985 at this institute) is an important training base for the State Administration of Work Safety. It provides the following training services on a regular basis, including mine safety supervision, mine rescue, emergency management and mine disaster prevention & control, etc. About 6,000 trainees accept training here annually. Guided by the school motto “Enhancing Self Motivation and Cultivation, Safeguarding Production and the Nation”, the school has fostered and encouraged its spirit of “United, Industrious, Pragmatic and Innovative”. The school has also developed a pragmatic teaching style which aims to uphold a standard of excellence by “Pursuing Rigorous Scholarship, Imparting Knowledge and Educating People”. The school has created a sound academic atmosphere enabling all its teachers and students to enjoy “Learning, Thinking, Practicing and Creating”.

1. History

North China Institute of Science and Technology was founded in 1984, originally known as Beijing Coal Management Institute. it was reorganized as North China Mining College in 1993. In 1997 the College was assessed and evaluated by the former State Education Commission as one of the 27 demonstrative and key construction engineering colleges in China. By the year of 2002, another milestone was reached in the development of the college--an upgrading to an undergraduate institute, which was renamed as North China Institute of Science and Technology. In the year of 2011, NCIST was qualified to admit postgraduate students in the field of engineering (Safety Engineering)..

2. Discipline and Programs

North China Institute of Science and Technology offers 47 undergraduate programs, covering eight disciplinary fields: engineering, science, liberal arts, law, economics, management, education and arts, etc. Safety Technology and Engineering, Mining Engineering are provincial key disciplines; Safety Engineering, Mining Engineering and Automation are three undergraduate specialties which are listed by the Ministry of Education as special construction programs for their unique characteristics. The total enrollment of full-time students is over 16,700 at NCIST. Of all the undergraduates, over 90% get immediate employment and about 30% receive postgraduate admission, especially for Safety Engineering major the rate is currently near 30%.

 3. Academic Facilities and Scientific Research

North China Institute of Science and Technology covers a total area of 800 acre, and has a further building area of 427,000 m2. The facilities and equipment for teaching and research are currently valued at 190,000,000 CNY. Currently, NCIST has 11 research centers distributed in the following fields, including gas prevention and control, water damage prevention and control, information and control technology and safety and social development, etc; 5 key laboratories of the provincial and ministerial level, including mine disaster prevention and control, safety ergonomics, green mining and ecological  restoration; 2 platforms supported by safety technology--industrial explosion disaster prevention research center and North China safety science. NCIST is entitled first grade work safety measurement and test qualification. Besides, it owns a demonstration center of experimental teaching about electrical and electronic experiments in Hebei province. Modern teaching technology is so widely applied in NCIST that it serves as a network base for the China Education and Research Network (CERNET). The NCIST library has a large collection of 1,210,000 books, and over 1,249 newspapers and periodicals (in both Chinese and other languages). Additionally, it has 1,570,000 digital books, together with 23 databases, thus has established a more complete literature supporting system. Currently, NCIST has an excellent faculty team comprised of over 1,090 members in total, including 900 full-time teachers. Of all the professional teachers, about 81% hold master or doctoral degrees and nearly 50% are professors or associate professors. Furthermore, NCIST also has 4 academician (external) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician  and 16 state-level senior experts specialized in various fields.

4. Great Achievement

North China Institute of Science and Technology hosted over 580 projects with 2.08 millions , including 20 national projects like NSFC projects, 40 provincial and ministerial projects; published 3117 papers, including 2024 core papers and 508 papers in SCI, EI and CPCI-S. In the technology innovation, it awarded 1 national prize for progress in science and technology, 54 provincial and above level science and technology prizes, 4 national invention patents and 7 utility model patents, which provides powerful support for shaping the characteristics of NCIST as being professional in safety technology. Meanwhile, it developed a series of technology products for applying in the safety production and achieved an excellent reflection.

5. Communication and International Cooperation

North China Institute of Science and Technology maintains a long-term and stable cooperative relationship with the UNDP, European Commission and the International Labor Organization; meanwhile, joint education programs have been started with higher learning institutions and research institutes from America, UK, Canada, Australian and Italy to cultivate professionals. Presently, more than 25 long-term foreign experts and teachers are employed by the institute. In 2017, around 4.5 million funds for foreign experts and projects applied from State Foreign Expert Bureau, and 2 foreign experts are elected in the Supporting Plan for Foreign High-Quality Experts. To push the international Chinese education development, it built the “One Belt and One Road” of China-Latvia Academic Exchange Center, and there are 30 more Chinese teachers as the Chinese volunteers sent to America, Chile, Egyptian, and Thailand, etc. Moreover, the current enrollment of international students is nearly 50.
