Medical Internship at Tongji University School of Medicine, China

For MBBS program at Tongji University School of Medicine, the last year is for internship or rotation after 5 years’ theory study. Internship is of great importance since the practicality of medicine, which is compulsory to acquire MBBS degree. Internship is also necessary to participate in Medical Licensing Examination for being a formal Chinese doctor after graduation. 

Tongji University School of Medicine has altogether 8 affiliated hospitals with over 5000 registered beds responsible for students’ clinical internship/practice and rotations, including Tongji Hospital, Shanghai No. 10 People's Hospital, Shanghai East Hospital, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Health Hospital and Yangpu Center Hospital.

Medicine is a practical field, after 5 year’s study of basic medicine and clinical medicine; international students who apply for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Tongji University School of Medicine must finish 1 year internship under the instruction of a professor. They can choose internship in China or finish it when back to their home country.

After 1 year internship, practical skills will be greatly improved, which will lay the foundation for being a doctor in the future. An examination needs to be passed after 1 year rotation to get MBBS degree.

Some foreign students may go back to their home country or to other country after graduation and acquiring MBBS degree or other medical degrees, they may apply for Medical Licensing Examination directly and become a doctor after passing the exam and finish registration according to the local regulations of the country.
