Brief Introduction

Located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing, Tsinghua University was established in 1911. The name “National Tsinghua University” was adopted in 1928. Since China opened up to the world in 1978, Tsinghua University has developed at a breathtaking pace into a comprehensive research university. At present, the university has several schools and departments with faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. The University has now over 25,900 students, including 13,100 undergraduates and 12,800 graduate students. As one of China’s most renowned universities, Tsinghua has become an important institution for fostering talent and scientific research. The educational philosophy of Tsinghua is to "train students with integrity." Among over 120,000 students who have graduated from Tsinghua since its founding are many outstanding scholars, eminent entrepreneurs and great statesmen remembered and respected by their fellow Chinese citizens.

1. History

Tsinghua University was established in 1911 on the site of “Qing Hua Yuan (Tsinghua Garden)” a former royal garden of the Qing Dynasty. It functioned at first as a preparatory school called Tsinghua Xuetang. On April 29, 1911, Tsinghua Xuetang began its first term of study, and from that year on, the Tsinghua’s anniversary has fallen on the last Sunday of April. The name was changed to “Tsinghua Xuexiao (Tsing Hua College)” after the 1911 Revolution. In 1925, Tsinghua launched its four-year undergraduate programme. In 1928, its name was changed to “Guoli Tsinghua Daxue (National Tsinghua University),” and in the autumn of 1929 its graduate school was set up. Following the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan in 1937, Tsinghua University, Peking University and Nankai University merged to form the National Southwest Associated University in Kunming. In 1946 The University was moved back to its original location in Beijing after the war. Three years after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a nationwide restructuring of institutes of higher education began, and in 1952, Tsinghua University became a multidisciplinary polytechnic university specializing in training engineers. Since 1978, Tsinghua University has strengthened its teaching in sciences, economic management, humanities and law. 

Today, Tsinghua has become a leading university: while its teaching is focused on engineering, it concurrently offers degrees in other sciences, the liberal arts, management and law. Over the past over 100 years, Tsinghua University has witnessed and shared the hardships and glories of the nation. The University’s motto of “Self-discipline and Social Commitment” has inspired many generations of Tsinghua teachers and students to struggle for the prosperity of China. 

2. Discipline and Programs

Tsinghua University consists of 17 schools with 56 departments, which cover a variety of academic fields such as sciences, engineering, liberal arts, fine arts, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education and medicine. Tsinghua University holds the most advantageous subjects in science and technology among universities in China. It also established a series of characteristic subjects in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. In the academic year 2016-2017, Tsinghua University will offer 39 Bachelor’s degree programs, 99 Master’s degree programs and 82 doctoral degree programs to the international students. In particular, fourteen of the Master’s programs and four of the doctoral programs are delivered in English. Moreover, nearly 300 English-taught courses are open to the visiting/exchange students.

3. Academic Facilities and Scientific Research

Tsinghua University has a total physical collections over 4.79 million item/volumes, full-text e-journals in Chinese and foreign languages are over 67,000 and e-books are more than 8.77 million. Tsinghua University has 41 research institutes, 35 research centers, and 167 laboratories, including 15 national key laboratories. At Tsinghua University, research projects are the main base of supporting high-level scientific research and high-quality talents training, meanwhile, which are an important force to lead the development of disciplines. National science and technology programs (special projects, funds) are the main source of Tsinghua’s R&D expenditures. The scientific and technological research and projects at Tsinghua University are mainly supported by special projects and funding from the national science and technology programs. 

4.Great Achievement

Recently, Tsinghua University conducted 706 new humanities and social sciences research projects, including 9 major projects supported by National Social Science Foundation, 2 key projects of Philosophy and Social Sciences Research supported by Ministry of Education. Tsinghua University holds the largest numbers of academicians affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, of the top disciplines on the whole, of the Key National Laboratories, of national awards in science and technology, of research funds, and also of articles indexed in SCI, EI and ISTP over the years.

With strong research and training, Tsinghua University is consistently ranked as one of the top academic institutions in China. It is one of the nine members in the C9 League of universities. Recently, Tsinghua has become the first Chinese university to offer a Master of Laws program in American law, through a cooperative venture with the Temple University Beasley School of Law. The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia. Tsinghua was regarded as the most reputable Chinese university by Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings (2016) where it was ranked 18th globally.

5. Communication and International Cooperation

Tsinghua University has a long tradition of actively developing strategic partnerships and collaborations with prestigious universities, international organizations and enterprises throughout the world. The University sponsors high-level academic exchanges, joint programs, international conferences and other international activities. Student exchanges are encouraged to cultivate talented students with global vision. Tsinghua also plays an important role in global higher education organizations to promote multilateral cooperation and organizes many academic and cultural activities abroad to deepen mutual understanding between people from different countries and regions.
