Brief Introduction 

Founded in 1958, Zhejiang Ocean University (ZJOU) is situated in the urban area of Zhoushan Archipelago New Area which is the first state-level new area featuring marine economy. It is a province-affiliated institution of higher learning with the characteristics of ocean science, fisheries science and naval architecture & ocean engineering, and the multi-disciplinary coordinated development of science, agronomy, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management and pedagogy, etc.

At present, as the “Strategy to Build Up a Strong Oceanic Power” is being implemented in China, taking the chance both of the establishment of marine silk-road and of the construction of Zhoushan Archipelago New Area, Zhejiang Ocean University, adhering to connotation-oriented development, collaborative innovation, and international educational and sci-tech cooperation, is optimizing management, developing its characteristics, strengthening advantages, promoting teaching and research quality, striving to become an important cradle for cultivating professional marine talents, a R&D platform for marine science and technology, an incubator for marine high-tech industries, a talents-importing base for marine professionals and a vital center for China oceanic culture and social science research in the ECS area, in a hope to develop itself by 2025 into a high-level oceanic university with great influence both at home and abroad with prominent characteristics.   

1.History 

Zhejiang Ocean University was created in 1988 from the merger of Zhejiang Fishery University (established in 1958) and Zhoushan Junior Teachers College (founded in 1978). It was accredited to offer bachelor's degree programs in 1982 and to provide postgraduate degree programs in 2005.

2.Discipline and programs 

Through more than 50 years of development, ZJOU has grown into province-affiliated institution of higher learning with the characteristics of ocean science, fisheries science and naval architecture & ocean engineering, and the multi-disciplinary coordinated development of science, agronomy, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management and pedagogy, etc. There are currently 15,000 students enrolled in ZJOU. 30 bachelor degree programs and 20 master degree programs instructed in English are available to international students. 

As of 2014 March, the school has one provincial key discipline(marine science), 6 provincial key disciplines (fisheries, marine engineering, biochemistry and molecular biology, aquatic products processing and storage engineering, marine bio medicine, oil and gas storage and Transportation Engineering), 3 first-discipline master degree programs (Marine science, fisheries, marine and ocean engineering), 11 secondary discipline master programs, 8 agricultural extension master degree authorization field and equivalent master degree granting authorization (fisheries, aquaculture, food processing and safety, agricultural machinery, agricultural informatization, rural and regional development, facility agriculture, agricultural science and technology organization and service).

3.Academic facilities and Scientific research 

Covering an area of some 125 ha.(152,363 Mu), including a floorage of more than 337,100 sq. m, and boasting a collection of 281million RMB of teaching and research equipment, the university has 10 schools and 3 research institutions, i.e., Marine Fisheries Res. Inst. of Zhejiang Province, Innovation &Application Res. Inst., and ECS Development Res. Inst.; it has over 1,100 full-time faculty and staff members, among which there are 655 faculty members, 433professors, and 230 people with Ph.D. degrees. Some of them are national ”Faculty 1000” members, some have won China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, and some of them are specially invited professors of Zhejiang Province. There are 15302 full-time students. In addition, there is a constituent school, Donghai Sci-tech school. 

4.Great achievements 

For over fifty years, the university has persisted in running school on islands, having made great contributions both to the marine talent education in East China Sea (simplified as ECS hereafter), and to the sustainable development of fisheries industry as well as the transformation and upgrading of the marine economy. It has won the 1st prize, the 2nd prize and the 3rd prize of National Science and Technology Progress, and the prizes of National Science Congress. Till now, it has become an oceanic institution of higher learning and has important influence both at home and abroad in marine circle. 

5.Communication and international cooperation 

The international Office & Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office (international school) is the functional department in charge of international education and exchange affairs including affairs in Hongkong, Macao and Taiwan district in Zhejiang Ocean University. Its main duty is on developing external academic exchanges and scientific cooperation; inviting, employing and managing overseas experts and teachers, and providing services for them; recruiting and managing overseas students and international education cooperation. Besides, Zhejiang Ocean University has inter-university cooperative ties with over 20 institutions of higher education abroad.
