Why Study at Dalian Maritime University, China

Dalian Maritime University (DMU), located in southwestern Dalian, which is a famous coastal city, is one of the largest and best maritime universities and is the only key maritime institution under the Ministry of Transport, China. Founded in 1909, Dalian Maritime University enjoys a high reputation internationally as an excellent center of maritime education and training as recognized by International Maritime Organization (IMO). Dalian Maritime University is one of the member universities of “Project 211”, a plan to build one hundred national-level universities in China.

(1) History

The long history of the University can be traced back to 1909, when the Nanyang Institute in Shanghai established a Shipping Management Section. Dalian Maritime University was founded in 1953 through the merger of three merchant marine institutions: Shanghai Nautical College, the Northeast Navigation College and Fujian Navigation School. At the time its name was Dalian Marine College, and it was the only maritime college in China. In 1960, Dalian Maritime University was designated a national key institution of higher education. In 1983, the Asia-Pacific Region Maritime Training Center was established at Dalian Maritime University by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the IMO. In 1985 a branch of the World Maritime University (WMU) was established. In 1997, Dalian Maritime University became one of the member universities of “Project 211”, a plan to build one hundred national-level universities in China. Up to now, more than 90000 advanced professionals have been educated and trained at Dalian Maritime University, most of which have become the backbone of China’s shipping industry.

(2) Discipline and programs

Dalian Maritime University consists of 19 teaching and research units, including Navigation College, Marine Engineering College, Information Science and Technology College, and etc. Currently, Dalian Maritime University has 7 Post-doctoral Research Centers, 6 Primary Discipline Doctoral Programs, 32 Subordinate Discipline Doctoral Programs, 18 Primary Discipline Master’s Programs, 97 Subordinate Discipline Master’s Programs, 51 undergraduate programs, and 2 National Key Disciplines. There are more than 20000 full-time students and more than 4,500 international students studying at Dalian Maritime University.

(3) Academic facilities and scientific research

Dalian Maritime University currently employs over 1273 faculty members, including more than 443 professors. Dalian Maritime University owns the buildings for maritime sciences that contain fully functional equipment and facilities. There are additional buildings for maritime training and research, survival training, swimming pool, planetarium and libraries. Dalian Maritime University has a training dock and over 100 laboratories for teaching, training and research that also include a full mission ship-handling simulator and an engine room simulator. Dalian Maritime University also owns and operates two ocean-going training vessels. Dalian Maritime University has one national level engineering research center, one national level Science and technology cooperation base, 7 Provincial level Engineering Technology Research Centers, 18 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories.

(4) Great achievements

In 2012, Dalian Maritime University had about 1261 items of science and technology projects having been developed, including 383.434 million CNY and 1106.3 people having participated. There are about 403 items of humanities and social sciences research projects have been developed, including 82.1 people and 10287500 CNY having participated. According to University ESI papers lists in 2012, the total number of citations has been cited about 3349 times, about 994 items of papers has been cited, and the number of ESI papers was cited about 3.37 times frequently.

(5) Communication and international cooperation

Dalian Maritime University has an international vision regarding academic cooperation and exchange. Since 1979, Dalian Maritime University has established cooperative relations with more than 102 international renowned maritime institutions, which include those in Russia, USA, Japan, Great Britain, Korea, Australia, Sweden, Egypt and Vietnam, etc. The academic relationships with these sister universities are maintained through mutual visits, faculty staff and student exchanges, joint programs and joint research projects. Moreover, the University has established long-term cooperative relationships with international organizations and institutions, including the IMO, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), Global Maritime Education and Training Association (Global MET), the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), as well as some world famous shipping companies such as Lloyd’s Register, NYK.

Dalian Maritime University was enrolled in the first batch of institutions under the Chinese Government Scholarship Program and began to recruit international students in 1955. Moreover, Dalian Maritime University has been entrusted by Liaoning Provincial Government and Dalian Municipal Government since 2008 to select excellent international students for Liaoning Provincial Government Scholarship and Dalian Government Scholarship. Up to now, more than 4,500 international students and advanced professionals from over 70 countries and regions have been educated and trained at Dalian Maritime University.
