Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), founded in 1896, as one of the higher education institutions which enjoy a long history and a world-renowned reputation in China, is a key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China and co-constructed by MOE and Shanghai Municipal Government. (1) History
In 1896, the Nan yang Public School was founded in Shanghai by an imperial edict issued by the Guangxu Emperor, under the Business and Telegraphs Office of the imperial government. In 1904, the Ministry of Commerce took over the school, and in 1905 changed its name to Imperial Polytechnic College of the Commerce Ministry. In 1906, the college was placed under the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs, and its name was changed to Shanghai Industrial College of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. When the Republic of China was founded, the college was placed under the Ministry of Communications and its name was once again changed, this time to Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry. In 1920, the Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry merged with two other colleges and changed its name to Nan Yang College of Chiao Tung. In 1938, the Ministry of Education took over the university and renamed it to National Chiao Tung University. In 1943, the graduate school was founded. In the 1950s, the pinyin Romanization system was developed in Mainland China and Chiao Tung University changed its English name to Jiao Tong University. Shanghai Second Medical University was merged into Shanghai Jiao Tong University on July 18, 2005, under the name Medical School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
(2) Discipline and programs
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has had 28 schools/departments, with 15971 undergraduates and 29895 postgraduates, 1869 international students. Today Shanghai Jiao Tong University has 64 undergraduate programs covering 9 major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and arts. Today Shanghai Jiao Tong University has 298 masters-degree programs in many different fields, 203 Ph.D. programs in economics, law, literature, science, engineering, management and many other fields, 32 post-doctorate programs.

(4) Great achievements
Shanghai Jiao Tong University enjoys an increasingly high scientific research level and technology innovation level. Since 2013, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has ranked first for four consecutive years in terms of the project number and the amount of money issued by National Natural Science Foundation of China. The number and other indexes of SCI papers of Shanghai Jiao Tong University rank among the top for years, with 4,146 SCI papers in 2012 remaining the second among all the universities in China. The total number of SCI-cited papers from 2003 to 2012 reaches 23,655, with 171,550 times of citation, which keeps ranking the third in China. 1,041 papers were regarded as "doing-a-good-job" papers, ranking the third in China. 409 papers in different fields were published on journals whose Impact Factors are among the top 10 percent, ranking the fourth in China. 753 co-authored papers with Shanghai Jiao Tong University as the first-author affiliation were published on international journals, ranking the third. 4 papers were selected in the "100 most influential international academic papers in China 2012", ranking the third. 7,650 sci-tech papers were published domestically, with 34,028 times of citation nationwide, remaining the first in China. 231 papers were published on SSCI and A&HCI journals, ranking the third among all the universities in China.
(5) Communication and international cooperation
At the beginning of the founding, Shanghai Jiao Tong University adheres to the purpose of educational internationalization. Back to the 30s and 40s of the 20th century, the school had many teachers studying abroad back to China, and the curriculum system had the elite standards same as MIT and other famous university. Undergraduate teaching has reached the world advanced level.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University has actively and intensively developed its international academic exchange programs and cooperation. It has established cooperation and communication with many different universities coming from many countries, such as MIT, University of California, University of Michigan, Duke University, University of Heidelberg, Oxford, Cambridge University, KTH, NTNU, National University of Singapore, University of Sydney, Catholic University of Louvain and many other famous universities. Until now, there are 1869 international students coming from different countries studying here.
