Brief Introduction

Established in 1956, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) is one of the first four TCM colleges in China and the only key characteristic university of medicine in Shanghai municipal universities and colleges. SHUTCM is also the exclusive leading medical college in Shanghai Municipal institutions of higher learning.

1. History

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine originated from 1956. In 1985 when Shanghai Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology was established, the system of two organizations with one team was formed and the leaders hold two positions in the University and Academy.

2. Campus Overview

Covering an area of approximately 83 acres, SHUTCM campus is located at the Science, Technology and Education Zone, Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park, with full educational facilities and landscaped surroundings. It has now become a key part of ‘Zhangjiang Medicine Valley’ in the strategic plan of an ‘innovative city’ in Shanghai. In the university, there are 7322 full-time students, including 550 doctoral postgraduates, 1840 master-degree postgraduates, 3657 undergraduates, 249 junior college students and about 1200 international students. 174 of the full-time students are from the districts of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Every year, there are nearly 1,000 short-term training course students from over 30 countries and areas, as Japan, Korea, Russia, France, UK, USA, Germany, Italy, etc.

3. Discipline Construction, Laboratories and Programs

There are 4 national key disciplines of TCM External Medicine, Chinese Pharmacology, TCM Internal Medicine and TCM Orthopedics & Traumatology, 2 national key (rearing) disciplines of TCM History & Philology and Acupuncture & Tuina, 38 key disciplines of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 6 Shanghai key disciplines (first-class disciplines of Shanghai universities and colleges), 1 engineering research center of Ministry of Education, 3 key labs of Ministry of Education, 3 key labs of Shanghai Municipality, and 8 key labs of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The number of national key labs ranks No. 2 in all TCM universities and colleges and No. 1 in Shanghai local universities and colleges. In 2012 National First-Class Discipline Assessment, Chinese Pharmacology ranks No. 1; Traditional Chinese Medicine ranks No. 2 and Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine ranks No. 3.

Now there are 14 majors of bachelor degree and junior college program. Besides the majors of bachelor degree of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine and Chinese Pharmacology, there are majors of Nursing, Food Hygiene and Nutrition, Rehabilitation, Pharmacy, etc. There are also 12 majors of bachelor degree and junior college program. Currently, SHUTCM has 3 doctorate programs of first-class disciplines of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine and Chinese Pharmacology, 24 doctorate programs of second-class disciplines, 35 master degree programs of send-class disciplines and 3 post-doctoral research stations. The doctorate degrees contain all TCM disciplines.

4. Strong Faculty

Among the well-structured and high-quality staff, there are about 4,500 teaching and administrative staff in the University, nearly 750 of them have high-rank professional titles including one academician from China Engineering Academy, famous national TCM doctors, and leaders of the state-level key subjects of science, 3 academicians and 76 mentors of National Successors Training Class of TCM Experts and 60 municipal-celebrated TCM doctors. By focusing on cultivating and attracting talents from both home and abroad, the University has good academic environment for both study and research. And International Education College will recruit talents for the high-level and high-quality teaching staff as well.

5. Affiliated Hospitals

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has 18 subsidiary colleges and departments, 3 directly affiliated hospitals and 4 indirectly affiliated hospitals, 22 subsidiary or collaborated research institutes, 15 research centers, 1 healthcare- education - research consortium consisting of 19 TCM institutions in Shanghai, 3 bases of Ministry of Education: China University Student Martial Arts Training base, National University Student Cultural Quality Education Base and National Talent Training Base of Science Basics Research. Cultural Dissemination Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacology is the key research base of social humanities in Shanghai general institutes of higher education.

6. Excellent Alumni

Over the past 50 years, many graduates from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine have become distinguished scholars in the TCM field and its alumni are now spread over 60 countries around the world.

7. Significant Achievements

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine passed the appraisal for excellent undergraduate education by the Ministry of Education in 1999 and regained the honor in 2007. SHUTCM ranks the first in all TCM universities and colleges in China according to its comprehensive strength.

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been accredited by the Ministry of Education as the ‘Innovative Experiment Unit on Personnel Training Mode’ and ‘Pilot Program for Characteristic Specialties’. In 2010 National Post-doctoral Research Station Assessment, Chinese Pharmacology was exclusively cited as “Honorable Mention” in all TCM disciplines. In recent years, 1 doctoral dissertation was cited as “National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation” and 4 doctoral dissertations were cited as nomination of “National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation”.

8. Great Prospects

By adhering to the running principles of “intensiveness over extensiveness, distinction over all-inclusiveness and essence over fame” and to the orientation of “research-teaching type, characteristic type and open type university”, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, salient-featured in disciplines, is heading for a first-class TCM university across China and the world.

Communication and Cooperation

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has established cooperative relations to 14 countries and areas in scientific research, education, medical treatment, etc. The University has 2 Sino-foreign cooperative education programs which were kept on record by Ministry of Education, the Sino-British Cooperative Pharmacy Program and Sino-British Cooperative Nursing Program.
