Scholarships in Tongji University, China for International Student

International students at Tongji University will be provided with opportunities for different types of scholarships. In order to qualify for scholarship, applicants must meet specified requirements. Scholarships are awarded based on the thorough evaluation of all merits in terms of academic performance, leadership competence and etc.

1. Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship

In order to recruit more and higher level international students to study the distinguishing feature of majors, to undertake the Educational Strategy of Shanghai, to build an excellent educational environment and to make Shanghai a bigger center for international students nationwide, Shanghai government has set a special fund, i.e. "Shanghai government scholarship for international students," as an action plan, which is conducted to accelerate the development of education in Shanghai for international students.

(1). Eligibility

a) Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals in good health;

b) Education background and age limit:

- Applicants for doctoral degree studies must have master's degree and be under the age of 40;

- Applicants for master degree studies must have bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35;

- Applicants for undergraduate studies must have completed senior high school and be under the age of 25.

c) Outstanding in academic study and daily performance;

d) Not been awarded any other Chinese government scholarships at the time of application;

(2). Application Materials

a) Application Form;

b) Scan copy of highest diploma and transcripts. Both documents should be in English. Non-English certification should be attached with the notarized version in English. If applicants are high school or university students, they shall also provide studying certificates;

c) Study plan in English. Information such as basic personal information, education background, working experience, and interested research projects and research plan if were accepted as the doctoral student should be included. (Master: no less than 1000 words; Doctor: no less than 1500 words);

d) Published paper title, abstract and other certificates and materials that can attest to academic achievements and research ability;

e) Applicants for Doctorate or Master Programs must provide two letters of recommendation in English by professors or associate professors;

3. Marine Scholarship of China-Tongji University Program

The ocean, covering about 71% of the Earth’s surface, plays a primary role in addressing the climate change and supporting the global economy, trade and livelihood. The sustainable ocean development has direct impact on the development and prosperity of all coastal countries now and in the future. And it has become an inexorable trend worldwide that through international cooperation and exchange we should deepen our understanding of the ocean and promote sustainable ocean development to enhance regional and global economic prosperity. Under this consideration, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) and the Ministry of Education of China jointly initiate the program of Marine Scholarship of China (hereinafter called the Scholarship) for the purpose of providing financial support to outstanding students from the coastal countries or regions around the South China Sea, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans and African developing countries to study in China for a master’s or doctoral degree in oceanography or other related specialties, cultivating advanced professionals of the related fields for developing countries, enhancing international marine cooperation and exchange, and promoting the harmonious ocean development in the region and around the world. China Scholarship Council (CSC) is in charge of the admissions and routine management of the Scholarship.

(1). Enrollment Candidates

i. The applicant should be a citizen of non-Chinese nationality in good health, from a coastal/island country of South China Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific and its surround island countries, or an African developing country.

ii. The applicant must apply for the postgraduate program of ocean-related specialties.

iii. Any applicant who is currently engaged in oceanographic and relevant sectors will be given high priority.

(2). Major

Marine Science; Geophysics; Geology; Environmental Science; Environmental Engineering; Hydraulic Engineering; Surveying and Mapping Engineering

(3). Eligibility

i. The applicant for master’s degree studies is required to have a bachelor’s degree and be usually under the age of 40;

ii. The applicant for doctoral degree studies is required to have a master’s degree and be usually under the age of 45.

(4).  Duration of the Scholarship

i. Candidates for master’s degree: 2-3 years of study with the Scholarship;

ii. Candidates for doctoral degree: 3-4 years of study with the Scholarship;

iii. The duration of the Scholarship will be defined upon the student’s admission to the university, and will not be extended in principle. If a student is unable to finish the program for some special reasons, his or her scholarship may be extended until graduation.

(5). Materials for application

i. Application Form ;

ii. Photocopy of last degree certificate. Certificates in languages other than English must be accompanied by notarized translation in English;

iii. Scan copy of academic transcripts. Transcripts in languages other than English must be accompanied by notarized translations in English;

iv. The applicant’s study or research plan in China (in English);

v. Two letters of recommendation in English by Professors or associate Professors;

vi. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form, completed in English. The applicant must strictly take all the examinations as required by the Form. Leaving a blank or absence of signature of the doctor or seal of the hospital will make the form invalid.
