Brief Introduction

Harbin Engineering University (in short HEU, formerly Harbin Military Engineering Institute), founded in 1953, is located in Harbin, ice city, near beautiful Songhua River. It is one of the first key universities in the national "211 Project" (to set up 100 national key universities in 21st Century) and the key construction on the Specific Disciplines Innovation Platform (belongs to 985 project) and the first batch of key constructed universities in China having graduate school and National University Science Park. (1). History 

Harbin Engineering University traces its origins to the PLA Military Engineering Institute established in Harbin on September 1st, 1953. In 1970 the university was renamed Harbin Shipbuilding Engineering Institute. The current name has been in use since 1994. Harbin Engineering University was one of the first universities authorized by the state to award master's and doctoral degrees.

There are 14 post doctor work stations, 13 Doctoral first-class disciplines, 28 Master’s first-class disciplines, and 56 undergraduate programs provided for students at Harbin Engineering University. In the last two rounds of National College of discipline assessment made by the Ministry of Education, a total of 23 subjects of Harbin Engineering University participated in the assessment. Among them, 2 disciplines ranked in the top 5, 4 subjects ranked in the top 10, 9 disciplines ranked in the top 20, 15 disciplines ranked in the top 30; the discipline ship and ocean engineering ranked in the second place, nuclear science and technology ranked in the fifth place, system science in the seventh place, aerospace science and technology ranked in the eighth place.

Harbin Engineering University is top-ranking in the fields of shipbuilding engineering and nuclear power sciences in China, such as underwater robots, ship anti-rolling, marine power, integrated navigation, underwater acoustic positioning, nuclear power simulation, simulation of large ship etc, in domestic or abroad. Harbin Engineering University has become national base and application research institute of the areas of naval architecture and ocean engineering. Harbin Engineering University also has more than 40 scientific research institutions and 150 scientific research and teaching laboratories, among them there are 2 national defense science and technology key laboratories, 2 key discipline laboratory of national defense, 1 national science innovation talent-exchange base, and 1 national electrical and electronic teaching base, 6 state-level experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national university students' cultural quality education base. The library has more than 2,950,000 books.

Since the beginning of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan in 2006, the school has adhered to major strategic demands of national defense, constantly condensing the direction of the frontier research, focusing on improving the capability of independent innovation, undertaking major national science and technology research and a large number of research projects such as the National Defense Program 973 (which is called the National Basic Research Program of March 1997), Program 863 (which is known as the High-tech Research Development Program carried out by Deng Xiaoping in March 1986), and national defense pre-research and models, winning more than 260 provincial and ministerial awards. The quality management of the research products has been identified by the ISO9000 quality system. Harbin Engineering University has become the first domestic university possessing "dual authentication". In addition, the school owns a national university science park with a flourishing development of the technology industry and industrial-academic cooperation. In 2011, the total scientific research spending reached 760 million CNY, which ranked among the forefront of the national key universities.

Harbin Engineering University is dedicated to maintaining an international focus, building relationships with institutions such as the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Sydney, the Far Eastern National University of Russia, the University of Electro-Communications, the world's five major classification societies, the International Atomic Energy Agency and around 100 other famous universities, enterprises and scientific research institutions. HEU implements several high level programs, such as the GOC Scholarship, Nation-building project level Graduate Students. As its internationalization process accelerates, Harbin Engineering University funds an increasing number of teachers to study, teach and cooperate abroad annually.
