Structural Engineering is a subject which studies the structure type selection, mechanical analysis, design theory and construction technology and management that have the common character in civil engineering, referring to both the object of construction project, namely various engineering facilities, and the application of materials, equipment and the surveying, design, construction, maintenance, repair and other technical activities, occupying very important position in the entire field of city and town construction fields.
Structural engineering uses mechanics method to analyze the internal force and deformation of the building (such as: houses, bridges, dams, etc.) and structures (such as: retaining walls, chimneys, architecture, etc.) under various load effect, through the control of the internal force and deformation of the structure to reach the goal of safe reliability in the construction and use process.
2. Analysis Methods
The traditional analysis method of structural engineering is to simplify the numerical equations of various kinds of tensor (such as internal force, displacement, etc.) by using the coordinate axes to obtain the internal force and displacement of structural components (such as beams, columns, etc.). After the computer appears, new analysis methods like the finite element method, the nonlinear analysis method and so on obtain the widespread application to solve various kinds of more complex structural problems (such as a variety of different nature material coordination work and so on).
