Brief Introduction

Set up in 1956, the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the 4 earliest established TCM universities in China, which is the Sichuan provincial key university and co-constructed by the provincial government and the State Administration of TCM, and evaluated an excellent grade in the National Evaluation of Undergraduate Education.

Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is located in the Chengdu City of Sichuan, a place with a reputation of “hometown of Chinese Medicine & treasure house of medicinal herbs" and hometown of pandas. 

 (1). History

In the southwest of China, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CDUTCM) is located downtown of the city at Shi-er-qiao Rd, Chengdu 610075, Sichuan, China. It had been one of earliest established TCM universities in China, since there are three TCM universities in China. It was founded in 1956. It had been one of the best TCM Universities in 1985. In 1995, it was approved by the Committee of the National Education Department of China to change the name short form of refer name into CDUTCM for Traditional Chinese Medicine and CDUT for University of Technology and so on.

 (2). Discipline Construction

Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the first universities which can confer master’s/doctor’s degrees and have postdoctoral workshops. It can confer 19 doctoral degrees, 56 master's degrees and 3 postdoctoral workshops. Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has four national key courses (Chinese Pharmacy, Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Traditional Chinese Medicine Otorhinolaryngolory (ENT), Traditional Chinese Medicine Gynecology) and 14 provincial key courses. It has a graduate to higher education levels that from undergraduate to graduate, up to master and doctorate and teaching many sort of TCM courses. It also has Chinese medicine and the engineering, management, literature and agricultural courses, etc. It has short-term as well as long-term course including for foreigners and local students and some students have also go to further study after and some in Shanghai after graduation of University. The campus region has area of 130 hectares and over 50 majors and it is quite large enough. It major focus is to have the high quality of TCM skilled students including local and global wide, the specialties covering the clinical practice of Chinese medicine (herbs and traditional medicines), Chinese pharmacy for pharmacist students, pharmaceutical engineering, nursing, management, marketing, Tibetan medicine and so on. It is a state TCM base for education-research-medicine. Even though graduated from TCM School it has their specific specialist like example Pharmacist.

(3). Campus Overview

Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is as large as 120 hectare in campus. The library has a collection of 1.29 million copies of books. The staff is over 2,000, including 600 professors and associate professors, among which 300 are tutors of master and doctoral students. There are over 20,000 students, including 600 from overseas. There are 57 national/ministerial centers or labs. Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine provides 31 majors for undergraduates, 49 subjects for master degree and 21 for PhD conferment. There are 4 national key subjects, 20 ministerial/provincial key subjects and the major-"Chinese Pharmacy"-the sole State Polytechnic Base for Research and Teaching personnel training; 6 national special majors, 3 national good teaching groups, and one innovative/ experimental garden. 

(4). Affiliated Hospitals

Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 12 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 19 teaching hospitals, 38 training hospitals. The 1st affiliated hospital is the State TCM Clinical Research Base of Diabetes. 

(5). Significant Achievements

Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine can be able to cope for doing researches related with TCM and it has made contributions to the society. With 6 Research Institutes and 37 Research Institutional offices, it also has the states’ GCP center, Chinese Pharmaceutical Screening and Evaluation Center and ADR Monitoring Center. In recent years, the university has taken the state key project of the Tenth Five-Year Plan, “973 program” and “863 program”, key programs of the National Fund of Nature and Science. Various prizes have been awarded. Cultural Museum of TCM and Museum of Chinese Drug Specimens are with abundant collection.

(6). Communication and Cooperation

Since 80s last century, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has accepted foreign students from 32 countries, having trained over 6,000 participants in a large variety of programs, including Chinese Medicine, Chinese Pharmacy and Acupuncture & Moxibustion. Since 1993, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine began to enroll the students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and foreign masters and doctors. The information-exchange relationship has been established between CDUTCM and 176 institutions in 31 countries and areas such as WTO, American National Library and American Royal Association. It has made exchange and cooperated with universities, R&D centers, and medical institutes in America, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Japan, Korea and Singapore etc.

Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is awarded the "China-ASEAN Education/Training Center" by the Education Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry, "TCM International Sci-Tech Cooperation Base" by the Sci-Tech Ministry, "TCM International Exchange & Cooperation Education Base and Medicine Base" by the State Administration of TCM, "WHO Research Cooperation Center of Human Reproduction", and "South-South Co-Training Center" by UN Population Funded.
